G. E. SANGER. DISPLAY TRAY;
No. 497,254. Patented May 9, 1893.
wifgrzsscs 193913161 %W gy kid u lfirgcys, 660 Z Z a m I I v r I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. SANGER, OF BELOIT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALBERT C.
' BLACKBURN, OF BARABOO, WISCONSIN.
DISPLAY-TRAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,254, dated May 9, 1893.
Application filed December 31 1392. Serial No. 456,916. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. SANGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Display-Tray, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sample display trays; and it has for its object to provide an improved device capable of ready attachment to any receptacle within which salable articles are placed, for the purpose of displaying a sample of the entire contents of such receptacle whether the same be full or partially full, while at the same time not interferring with the opening or closing of the cover of the receptacle, and furthermore avoids having goods exposed to dust, flies, &c., by being uncovered in order to displaythem. The device also provides for presenting a clean unbroken surface of goods and giving the appearance of a full stock in the receptacle.
With these and many other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a barrel, the cover of which is provided with a display tray as contemplated by this in vention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the cover and the display tray thereunder. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the tray removed from the cover.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:- A represents a barrel or other receptacle which is designed to hold goods for retailing and which is inclosed by the cover B having an opening C therein which opening is inclosed by the transparent or glass cover D. Removably attached to the under side of the cover 13 and directly over the transparent or glass window D is the sample orstock display tray D. The said display tray D consists of a shallow metallic pan having the encircling top flanges E. The flange E at one edge or side of the pan is provided with the open hinge slots F, through which the staples G are designed to pass and enter the wooden cover 13 at one edge of the opening (3 therein, and thereby serve to hinge the display tray directly over the window D so that the same can be readily filled and refilled according to the nature of the samples to be exhibited. After filling the tray D with the sample of the receptacle the same is swung flat against the under side of the cover and secured in such position with the articles pressing against the window or transparent face D by means of the securing pin or screw I-I, engaging the opposite swinging edge of the pan, thereby providing means for not only securing the tray in the proper position, but also allowing the same to be easily swung away from the window to be refilled or entirely detached. The slots F being open and leading in from the edge of the flange allows the tray to be readily disengaged from the staples without withdrawing the same from the cover.
Now it will be apparent that the herein described tray can be readily attached to any receptacle whatever having a glass face or window. It will be obvious, that the same can be secured to the inner or under side of the top or sides of a show case, bins or boxes of any description having glass faces, or even to a store door or window and in such case all that is necessary to attach the device is to pass the staples into the frame of the cover, show case, door or window to form the hinges and after pressing the same flat against the transparent face, securing the same in place by the securing pin or screw, also passing into the frame of the object. Themany adaptations of the herein described device will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=- The combination with a receptacle having a transparent face or window; of a shallow display tray or pan having an encircling top flange, and open hinge slots leading in from one edge of the flange, staples engaging said I In testimony that I claim the foregoing as hinge slots at one side of the transparent face my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in or window to hinge the tray directly back of the presence of two Witnesses.
the same, and a securing device engaging the GEORGE E. SANGER. free edge of the tray to hold the flanges there- Witnesses:
of fiat against said transparent face or win- I CORNELIUS BUNDEY,
dow, substantially as set forth. v O. H. ORTON.
