SODA-WATER APPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,201, dated May 9, 1893i.

Be it known that I, ADAM OI-IARA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soda-Water Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying,r drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in dispensing apparatus for soda-water, duc.; and it consists in providing the soda-water Vfountain with a slide or drawer carrying handles having stems whichV engage with the cocks of the sirop-jars, the slide or drawer being cut away immediately beneath said cocks and having means for holding the same in `engagement with the fountain.

The object of the invention is not only to provide convenient means for causing engagement with the cocks, but also prevent to a great extent condensation on this portion of the fountain, as a free circulation of air is provided, and if there is any condensation, or leakage, it will be in the rear portion of the apparatus.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a soda-water fountain with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the slide partially withdrawn. Fig. 4 is a view of the slide.

A designates a soda-water fountain, which may be of ordinary construction, the sirup jars B being supported therein in any suitable manner and having cocks b as shown. This class of fountains usually rests upon a base, and a space is provided above said base and beneath the cocks b for the reception of the tumblers or glasses into which the sirups are drawn, and usually the cocks have to be fitted nicely in the apertures in the partitions, there being an open space below the 5o operating handles. With my improved construction all the operating handles are carried by a single slide, C, which is adapted to rest upon side supports c. The lower portion of this slide is cut away to provide an open space beneath the outlet openings of the cocks b. The handles D are attached to the front wall of the slide in any suitable man ner, and when the slide is moved inwardly the stem of said handles is adapted to engage with the stem of the cocks. The lower side edges of the slide are provided with wnotches e with which spring catches f attached to the inner sides of the fountain will engage when the slide is moved fully inward. These spring catches have grasping portions at their ends which extend outwardly, as at f.

In the construction herein shown it will be noted that there will be a free circulation of air about the lower portion of the fountain which will prevent condensation thereon, thus obviating the great objection which exists in fountains as ordinarily constructed, as said condensation tends to tarnish the plating of the fixtures.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a dispensing apparatus for soda-water, the combination of the receptacle supporting the sirup jars, of a slide having operating handles which engage with the cocks of the sirup jars, said slide being centrally cut away substantially as shown, so as to provide a clear space beneath the cocks and per mit the circulation of air about the lower portion of the fountain and for the purpose set forth,

2. In a dispensing apparatus for soda-water, the combination of a fountain having a slide which carries turning handles for the cocks, the central portion of the base of the slide being cut away, substantially as shown said slide having adjacent to its ends notches e with which spring retaining catches are adapted to engage, substantially as shown,and for the purpose set forth.
