HERMETlCALLY-SEALED BUCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,835, dated May 2, 1893.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL N. LONG, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hermetically Sealed Buckets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a hermetically sealed bucket for sirups or canned goods, required to be kept perfectly air tight to prevent deterioration; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is a side elevation, illustrative of my invention. Fig. II is a vertical section, taken through the center of the bucket. Fig. III is a detail, top view of the bucket lid and the metal sealing strip, illustrating particularly the projecting, overlapping outer end of said strip. Fig. IV is a side elevation of the tool for removing the sealing strip from the bucket. Fig. V is a detail View, illustrating the manner in which the tool, shown in Fig. IV, removes the sealing strip; the tool in this figure being shown in transverse section across the slot in said tool. 7
In sirup, canned goods, &c., packages there is generally a total loss in the package after the original contents have been removed, and it is the object of my invention to provide a package that is not only excellent for containing the original goods, but is serviceable for further use after the original goods have been removed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the bucket formed with a top bead. 1 and, provided with an ordinary bail 2, connected to the bucket by cars 3.
4 represents the lid of the bucket, which lid has a depending flange 5, that fits within the bucket and a horizontal flange 4 that rests directly on the top bead.
To hermetically seal the lid to the bucket, I provide a strip 6 of very thin soft tin, or other suitable material, which I secure to the top bead of the bucket, and to the lid by soft solder, which solder will offer as little resistance outer end is bent outward, leaving a projecting point 7.
14 is the lower strip of solder securing the lower flange 6 to the body of the bucket and 14 is the upper strip of solder securing the upper flange 6 to the body of the lid.
' For the purpose of removing the strip 6,
and giving access to the bucket, when it is desired to open the bucket, I provide a tool 8 with a handle 9 at one end, and a slot 10 at the other end. To remove the strip, the slot 10 is passed over the point 7 of the strip, and the tool being turned round and round, the strip is drawn from the bucket and coiled round the tool, as will appear most clearly in Fig. V. The solder used being very soft,and the strip being of thin tin, or other suitable material, the strip is easily removed, allowing the lid to be then withdrawn from the bucket.
In the manufacture and sealing of these buckets, the sealing strip is put on the buckets before the goods are packed, and to leave access for the insertion of the goods, I-pro-- to be used, after which the bucket is left in good condition for further use.
