UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES D. BRAZIER, OF VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI, ASS IGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN C. HANLEY, OF SAME PLACE.
DAM OR LEVEE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,292, dated April 25, 1893.
Application filed December 27,1892. Serial No. 4 ,302- (No mOdfiL) To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES D. BRAZIER, of
Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State of Mississippi, haveinvented certain Improvements in the Construction of Dams or Levees, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in forming a dam or levee of a series of galvanized sheet iron structures of angular shape of cross section, havinga flanged base and internal galvanized iron pipe braces the ends of which are secured to the inclined sides, by means of feet and rivets, as will hereinafter fully appear.
In the further description of the said invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forminga part hereof and in which,
Figure 1 is a cross section of the improved levee, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of-the sheet iron structure alone.
Referring to the drawings,AAare the sides of the structure placed at an angle with reference to each other as shown in Fig. 1. The sides A may be formed of a single sheet of iron bent at a, or two sheets flanged and riveted together at the angle. At the base, the sides are flanged at b and to these flanges are riveted base plates D. The sides are held in shape, or at the proper distance apart and thus preserve the required form, by means of braces E of iron pipes with feet 0 screwed or welded thereon. These feet are fastened to the sides A by rivets and they are placed so as to render the sides stiff and rigid. The
'the ground or raised to any suitable distance above it. This completes the levee except that it may be covered with earth and given any form of cross section required.
I claim as my invention- 1. A structure to be used in the formation of levees or dams, which consists of a series of sections of sheet iron plates of angular cross section having internal'braces, flanged sides, and base plates secured to the said flanged sides, substantially as specified.
2. A structure to be used in the formation of a dam or levee which consists of two side plates in angular position with reference to each other and each provided with a flanged bottom, combined with internal braces and base plates seen-red to the flanged plates, substantially as specified.
