SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters patent No. 496,284, dated April 25, 189e.
Application filed April 22, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULIUs W. ScIIAUB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Controlling Runaway Horses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates more specifically to animprovementinharness especiallydesigned for controlling run-away horses, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of drive reins whereby increased power is obtained and further in the combination of the drive reins with the harness for the purpose of impeding the motion of the horse at the same time, all as more fully hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 shows a horse equipped with my improved harness. Fig. 2 is a detail showing a portion of the parts shown in Fig. l on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a diagram showing the invention as applied to double teams. Fig. 4

The drawings show an endless drive rein A extending over a small pulley B to the driver. The pulley B is secured to the end of abridle rein C in any suitable manner preferably so as to render it free to revolve.
Secured to the drive rein at one end and passing around the pulley B is the running strap D which terminates in a suitable hook or other means for detachably connecting it to the breeching E of the harness.
The parts being constructed and arranged as shown and described, it will be seen that with a pair of reins of this description, the driver when no eXigencies arise may control his horse by the direct application of the drive reins as in the usual manner, that is, in pulling his reins straight back (his hands' being preferably passed through the loops at the ends of the reins) the pull is transmitted direct to the bit. Should, however, exigencies arise for increasing his power he changes his hold on the reins in such manner as to pull on the upper portion of the drive reins only, so as to cause the reins to travel over the pul- SerialNo. 430,219. leys, this shortens up on the strap D and therefore causes the pulley to be pulled back and double the power on the bridle rein.
The change from one mode of applying the reins to the other mode can be done instantly and no confusion or mistake will be possible' bound up by tying his head and rump together and thus impeding his motion still further. While I consider this latter arrangement an additional feature of my improvementI want it explicitly understood that I do not want to be confined thereto and claim equally as well any other Inode of securing'the running straps so as to get a purchase. To this end the strap may be connected to the crupper, back strap, single tree, &c.
Obvious other modifications may be made of my improvement, as for instance the double reins may terminate in hand holds, as shown at F, in Fig. 2. With these the driver could change his hold on the reins quite as fast and easy while for ordinary use he may prefer it.
The application of my improvement to double teams is self-evident, and Fig. 3, shows the same in diagram, for one horse.
My invention is adapted to all styles of harness and may be used for saddle if desired, the only change necessary being to place the pulley more forward. The strap D may be permanently secured to the harness but preferably I provide it with a snap hook.
The modification in Fig. 4 is on the same principle as Figs. l and 2, only the running strap D is made integrally in one piece with the upper portion of the rein. It need hardly IOO be mentioned that a round block made smooth so that the rein will freely slide, is quite as efficient as the pulley.
What I claim as my invention isl. In a harness, the combination with the bridle of pulleys on opposite sides connected tothe bridle by suitable straps, driving reins on opposite sides freely movable over said pulleys both ends being passed back within reach of the driver, and straps connected with the reins, at or near the pulleys and extending back to a fixed part of the harness, substantially as described.
2. In a device for Controlling runaway horses, the combination with the harness, 0f the bridle rein C, the pulley B connected thereto, the endless drive rein A passing around said pulley, the running strap D oonneeted to said drive rein and the detachable connection of the running strap with the breeehing, substantially as described.
