PENCIL HOLDER AND SHARPENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,269, dated April 25, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RALPH MAZZA, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Leandro, Alameda county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Pencil Holders and Sharpeners; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to a novel combined pencil holder and sharpener.

It consists in certain details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to theaccompanyingdrawings,in which.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my pencilholder and sharpener. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cutter and sharpener.

A is an exterior tubular case or holder made of any suitable or desirable length, and preferably of thin sheet metal, one end being formed to contain an erasing rubber, and the other being split so as to form elastic compressive sides within which the pencil can be retained for ordinary use.

In one side of the holder A, and at some distance inward from the pencil holding end, is formed an open slot B, and within this slot is secured the pencil sharpening device. This consists of a conical steel socket O bent so that the two edges are brought nearly together, and the cutting edge is turned slightlyinward so as to leave an open channel or space between it and the other edge. These two edges converge to apoint which is closed so that the lead which projects from the pencil cannot be forced beyond this point. Near the point an opening D is cutout for the purpose of allowing any broken lead to be easily removed in case of such accident. The slot or opening between the cutting and the other edge of the sharpening part stands opposite the opening B in the outer case so that all shavings and refuse from the pencil are allowed to escape through this opening. As the point of the conical cutter lies central within'the tubular holder, it is necessary to support the pointas well as the outer periphery. The outer periphery of the sharpener is brazed or otherwise secured within the tube, and the point is supported by a thin collar E surrounding it, and having an exterior periphery'of such diameter asto just fit within the interior of the tube.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A combined pencil holder and sharpening device consisting of the metallic tubular case having the elastic holding end for the reception of the pencil, the conical steel cutter fixed within the case at a short distance from the holding end and havinga closed point and a hole or opening formed in the conical cutter adjacent to this point, and an open slot formed in the outer case corresponding with this discharge opening and that of the blade of the cutter, substantially as herein described.

2. A pencil holding and sharpening device consisting of a metallic'tubular case having an expansible elastic holding end, a conical steel cutter with closed point and discharge opening near the point, an open slot in the exterior case corresponding with the discharge openings of the cutter, and an annular disk fitting within the case and surrounding the point whereby the latter is supported and retained centrally within the tube, substantially as herein described.
