COMBINED SIDE LIGHT OR SCUTTLE AND VENTILATOR.

. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,856, dated April 18, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS UTLEY, engineer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, andaresident of Stoneycroft, Liverpool, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Combined Side Light or Scuttle and Ventilator, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to an improved combined side-light or scuttle and ventilator for use on shipboard, and intended, more particularly, for deck-houses.

The object of my said invention is to provide an improved compact light or. scuttle which has the usual hinged frame containing a strong glass, and, in addition, is fitted with means which will permit the passage of air from one side of the scuttle to the other, the

air passages and trunk being so arranged that the passage of spray therethrough can be prevented.

In order that my invention may be clearly understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the inboard side of a combined side-light and ventilator constructed according to my invention, part thereof being removed for the sake of clearness. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line so a: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a plan, in section on the line y y of Fig. 1.

A is the plating to which the said improved side-light or scuttle is secured in the usual manner. a

B is the main casing of the said side-light or scuttle, provided with a flange B and rim B as is customary, to enable a tight joint to be made between the casing and the edge of the opening A in the plating to which it is applied.

0 is an annular frame containing a strong glass D. The said frame is hinged to the casing B at B and is provided with a rim C, containing, in a groove on its face, a packing O of rubber or other material suited to make a water-tight joint between the said rim 0' and the inner edge of the casing B as shown in Fig. 2.

and E E are screws hinged to the casing and provided with nuts E to engage with the said jaw or jaws as is customary.

A portion B of the casing B is extended to'form a trunk, which is provided with baffies B The lower end of the said trunk opens outboard, and the upper end opens inboard, so that air, but not spray, will pass freely through the trunk, past the baffles. Across the inboard end of the said trunk a grid F is fixed, upon which a movable grid G is arranged to slide in a guide frame G secured on the said end of the trunk. The said grid G is employed to regulate the amount of air which passes through the fixed grid. The said guide frame G is arranged with a continuous projecting ridge G thereon around the four sides thereof. A door H, not shown in Fig. 1 for the sake of clearness, is hinged to the trunk at H and is grooved upon its face as at H to receive a packing of rubber or other suitable material, to make a tight joint with the said ridge G The trunk is fitted with a screw I, which is hinged thereto so that it will enter a jaw H on the door; the said screw is fitted with a nut 1 to engage with the said jaw, so that the door when closed can be forced against the end of the trunk, to make atight joint therewith. Thus the said door H. can be employed, at anytime, to prevent the passage of water through the trunk in bad weather, for instance.

What I claim is- 1. The combination of the side light or senttle, the ventilating trunk leading from the outboard to the inboard side of the said sidelight or scuttle, and baflies placed in said ventilating trunk, substantially as described for the purpose specified.

2. The combination with a side-light or scuttle, of a ventilating trunk 13 leading from the outboard to the inboard side of the said side-light or scuttle, and baffies B and regulating grids F and G in or upon the said trunk, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination with a sidelight or scuttle, of a ventilating trunk B leading from the outboard to the inboardside of the said side-light or scuttle, baffles 13 in the said trunk and a watertight door hinged to the trunk, substantially as set forth.

4.
