ISABELLA MAOKINTOSH, OF LUDLOW, KENTUCKY, ADHINISTRATRIX OF JOHN C. MAOKINTOSH, DECEASED.
LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,819, dated April 18, 1893.
Application filed March 11, 1892. Serial No. 424.586- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that JOHN C. MAOKINTOSH, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, residing at Ludlow, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, in his life-time invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oiling Devices for Piston-Rods and Valve- Stems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide new and improved oiling devices for the valve stems and piston rods of engines, and it consists in the features of construction and the combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a front elevation of the improved oiling devices, the valve stem and piston rod being in section; and Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use the invention the same will now be described in detail, referring to the drawings wherein The letters a indicate respectively a valve stem and a piston rod, andA andB the oiling boxes through which the valve stem and piston rod extend.
The box A is bisected on the horizontal axial plane of the valve stem (1,, and the box section 1 is secured to or forms part of a base plate 9, detachably secured by bolts 12 to the bracket 13 on the gland 14 of a stuffing box which is not deemed necessary to illustrate. The box sections 1 and 2 are tongued and grooved together and the section 2 is secured in place by set screwsd engaging the tongues 5 on the section 1 as in Fig. 1. The box B is also bisected on the horizontal axial-plane of the piston rod b, the sections 1 and 2 being secured to or formed respectively with the base plates 15, which are attached by bolts 7 and S to the bracket 16, on the gland 17 of a stuffing box, which it is not necessary to show.
By removingthe bolts 12, the sections of the oiling box A can be detached from the valve stem at and by removing the bolts 7 or 8, the
lower or upper section of the oiling box can be detached from the piston rod 1).
The oiling box A is provided at its upper side with an oil supply cup 0 and at its lower side with a projecting nipple O, with which the upper end of a tube E is connected by a coupling C The lower end of the tube E is inserted into an oil cup D carried by the upper section 2 of the oiling box 13, in such manner that the surplus lubricant from the oiling box A on the valve stem at will be conducted to the oiling box B on the piston rod 1). The oil cup D may be provided with a priming cap 10.
The construction described and shown renders it possible to readily remove the oil box sections from the brackets or flanges on the glands of stuffing boxes and materially economizes in the use of lubricant in that the surplus oil from the oiling box on the valve rod is conducted to the oiling box on the piston rod.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is The combination with a valve stem (1, a piston rod 1) and glands 14 and 17 provided respectively with vertically arranged brackets 13 and 16, of oiling boxes A and B mounted respectively on the valve and piston rods and bisected on the horizontal axial plane thereof, the oiling box A being provided with a base plate 9 and having on its upper side an oil cup 0 and on its lower side a projecting nipple C, and the oil box B provided with the base plates 15 and having on its upper side an oil cup D, a tube E connecting the nipple of the upper oil box with the oil cup of the lower oil box, and bolts detachably securing the base plates of the respective box sections to the brackets on the glands, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
