Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26,l 1905.
-Application iiled September 24:, 1904- Serial No; 225,865..
TovaZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, HAROLD P. TIPPETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county'of Franklin and State of Ohio', haveinvented a certain new and useful Improvement in Swab-Casings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in swab-casings.
The object of the invention is to produce a simple device of superior construction for effectually holding the swab material in place around the rod in such a manner as to entirely surround the exposed portion of the said rod.V
Finally, the object of the invention. is to providea device of the character described that will be strong, durable, and eiiicient and simple and comparatively inexpensive to make. l
With the above and other objects in view the. invention consists of the-novel details of construction and operation, a preferable embodiment of which is described in the'speciication, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, whereinswab-casing and a portion of the oil-supply pipe and showing the surrounding parts in Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the casing and its parts. Fig. 3 is an inner elevation of one of the sections of the swab-casing, and Fig. 4l is a horizontal view takenon the line w w of Fig. 2.
-. In the drawings the numeral l designates the pump-rod, and 2 portions of the glandnuts of suitable metallic packings. The gland# nuts are formed with shouldered extensions 3, about which the ,swab-casing is disposed.l
` The swab-casing is cylindrical in form and consists of two semicircular sectionst and 5,
each of which is provided with the internal collar portions 6, which when the casingis placed in position engage around the shoulders 3. The sections are each formed at their top and bottom on their meeting faces with laterally-extending lugs 7, which are provided with the screw-receiving openings 8, into which the screws 9 are inserted to hold the sections together when the casing is placed about the rod l and the shoulders 3. The casing is filled with a suitable swab material 10, and the frontsection 5 v is provided with a boss 11, having a screw-threaded opening 12, into which is screwed the elbow-pipe 13. The pipe 13 carries upon its upperend a suitable oil -cup 14, which being filled with a proper lubricant feeds the swabbing material 10 through lthe pipe 13. Of course it is to be understood that most any suitable means may be provided for supplying a` lubricant to the 'swabbing material. The sections of the casing may be formed from any suitable-metal, and the device is designed more especially to be used in connection with various kinds of pumps employing two cylinders, as 15 and 15%, in which a suitable packing between the cylinders is required;
Havingnow fullydescribed my invention, what I claim, and desire to' secure by Letters Patent, is Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the 1,'The combination withadjacent gland nuts ofalined cylinders and a rod passing therethrough, of a swab-casing surrounding said'rod and engaging each of'said gland-nuts.
2. The combination, with stationary glandnuts of alined cylinders, and a rod passing therethrough, of a swab-casing' consisting of a plurality of separate sections surrounding said rod and engaging the said gland-nuts, and means for supplying a lubricantv to the swab-casing. A
3.- A swab-casing formed of the sections L and 5 each provided with the projecting lugs 7 and the collar portions 6, anvd one of said sections having the boss 11 -formed with the opening 12.
HAROLD P. TIPPETT. In presence of A. L. PHELrs, C. STOUGHTON.
