BOTTLE-STOPPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,664, dated April l8, 1893.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, ANTONIO CARRAEA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the process of construction, to secure a device less liable to be accidentally detached or I opened, to render the device more simple in appearance and to reduce the cost of construction and enable the device to be more easily opened.

The invention consists in the improved bottle stopper and in the arrangements and combinations of parts of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth and finally embraced in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement, attached to the head of a bottle. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the upper section of the device; Fig.4 a side View of the collar for the neck of the bottle; Fig. 5, face and edge views of the back link, and Fig. 6, face and edge views of the front catch.

tion or sealing link g, the said lip being turned upwardly to form an eye, as will be seen upon reference to Fig. 1. A similar lip, h, is formed at the opposite side of the sealing link to receive the front link, z', which latter has a pivotal movement on said lip and also a lateral play suificient to enable the catches to be disengaged from one another by lateral pressure. The upper sealing link, g, at its center part, is ring shaped and through the center opening therein is inserted and held the button, j, of the elastic sealing plug or stopper, k, the said button being held in said ring by being normally larger than said opening, as will be understood. The catch ing link, 2', secured at the forward side of the link which furnishes the bearings for the sealing plug, is fastened upon a depending lip of said link at its upper end and at its lower end is curled outwardly to furnish a broad lateral bearing for the thumb. Between the linked or pivoted end and the said curled extremity, the catching link is provided with a lateral slot, Z, or a slot opening out to one side of the link, as shown in Fig. 2, to receive the catch projection, b, and admit a catching engagement and a disengaging action by lateral movements of the said catching link, produced by lateral pressure brought to bear at a point below the band, I), by the thumb, when the hand is grasping the lower portion of the neck of the bot-tle, a convenient and easy or natural position or place for such grasping. The slot, Z, is downardly bowed from the mouth of of the slot and thus the tension of the rubber plug holds the catches in engagement against a limited lateral pressure, and the catch, 1), is hooked to prevent disengagement should anything be forced accidentally between the finger projection and the bottle.

In closing the bottle by means of my improvements, the front link is grasped in the hand and the sealing link drawn over the mouth of the bottle, so that the elastic plug or stopper enters into impervious engagement therewith. A downward pull against the spring action of the plug, makes the closing more certain. A lateral movement then brings the slotted front link upon the hooked catch, the latter being thus brought into engagement with the concaved edge so that the parts are held with comparative security.

In opening the bottle, the thumb projection is simply pressed laterally from engagement, when the elastic plug throws itself and the links away from the mouth of the bottle with considerable force, so that the liquid may be poured therefrom'without any interference.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is The bottle stopper herein described, consisting of the bottle having a band around its neck portion, which is provided with a downwardly projecting hook catch 1), at its front portion, a link (1, with perforations c, and e, the former adapted to receive and secure the back ends of the band, the sealing link g, having a central ring shaped opening, and provided on opposite ends with hook catches f and n, the former being secured to the perforation e, of link 01, the elastic sealing stopper having a button j, inclosed within the ring, the link 2', pivoted at its upper end to the hook h, said link being provided with an inclined slot Z adapted to engage the catch 1), and held thereto by means of the end of the hook bearing against the body of the link below the slot, and the curled portion m, for disengaging the link from its catch, all combined and arranged as and for the purposes specified.
