PlCKER-STAFF CHECK FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 495,644, dated April 18, 1893.
Application filed December 7, 1892. Serial No. 454,340. (No model.)
To all whom it may cancer-n:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker-Staff Checks for Looms, of which the following is a specification, reference being made to the drawings, hereunto annexed.
The object of my invention, is to produce a cheap and durable device by means of which the shuttle is stopped gradually, in order to prevent the breaking of the cop and conse queut waste of the filling.
To this end my invention consists in a flat spring, secured at one end to the under side of the lay, with its free end projecting diagonally within the sweep of the picker staff, and adapted to bear against the side of the same, when atthelimit of its outward course; and in means to regulate the degree of pressure of said spring, against said picker staff.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1. represents a side view of a portion of the lay and picker staff of a loom, showing my improyement, properly attached thereto. Fig. 2. represents a view of the under side of the same, without the picker staff, and Fig. 3. represents an enlarged view of my improvement.

0, represents a flat spring, twisted half way around near one end, and provided with holes g, g, through which screws g 9' pass to secure it to the lay.
cl, represents a plate, secured to the side of the lay by screws, and projecting below the bottom of the same, where it is provided with an opening, adapted to loosely receive the bolt 6, which bolt also passes loosely through a hole in the blade of the spring 0, a short distance from the twist in the same. The spring, is rigidly secured to the under side of the lay, in a diagonal position therewith, having its free end projecting well within the track of the sweep of the picker stad, and by means of the nut on the bolt 6, the degree of its projection Within said track, is nicely adj ustod, so that its pressure on the side of the picker staff may be less or greater, according to the weight of the shuttle, or the speed of the loom. YVhen the spring is thus adjusted, the jam nut d is turned up against the plate (Z, so that the motion of the lay, may not jar the thumb-nut loose.
By the use of my improved picker staff check on a loom, the shuttle is stopped so gradually, that the breaking of the cop, and the consequent waste of filling, is avoided; and there is no tendency of the shuttle, or picker staff, to recoil.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A picker staff check for looms, consisting of a flat spring, twisted half way round near one end and rigidly secured to the under side of the lay by screws 9', g, with its free end projecting diagonally within the sweep of the picker staff, and provided with a hole near the twisted portion adapted to receive a bolt 9; a plate, provided with a hole adapted to loosely receive the bolt e, rigidly. secured to the side of the lay; a bolt e, connecting said spring with said plate, and provided with a nut, whereby the degree of projection of said spring within the sweep of the picker staff, may be nicely adjusted, as and for thepurpose described.
