NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHAN MARTIN, OF GALVESTOIL TEXAS.
PROJ ECTILE FOR FIRE-ESCAPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,505, dated April 18, 1893. Application filed January 16,1893. Serial No. 453,610. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHAN MARTIN, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Galveston,in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Projectiles for Fire-Escapes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to fireescapes and the object thereof is to provide a device in the form of a harpoon to which a cord or rope is attached, said device being projected from a gun or by any other means against the burning building with sufficient force to embed itself therein so that any suitable apparatus may be elevated to the building necessary for the escape of the inmates or so that the person or persons may descend by the rope attached to the harpoon.
Theinvention consists in a device constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represent an edge View of my improved device; Fig. 2 a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 a detail sectional View taken on linear wof Fig.1; Fig. lasimilar view taken on line 2 ,2.
In the accompanying drawings A represents a harpoon having at one end a barbed shaped head B and at the opposite end a loop 0 in which is located a grooved pulley a, the inner end of the loop at both of its sides isaguidegroove 1) for the cord or rope c. The shank d of the harpoon is provided with a spherical grooved guide D of a diameter equal to that of the loop 0 which latter has convex sides 2 as shown more clearly in Fig. 4. The guide D to direct the harpoon in its flight out of the gun and loop 0 upon its exterior being of equal diameter and describing in cross section a circle will nicely fit the bore of the gun used to project the device forward.
The ends of the cord or rope are on the ground in charge of a fireman or other person and when the deviceis projected forward out of the gun or by any other preferred means found most desirable, the cord or rope will be in a position opposite to that shown in the drawings and pass over the grooved pulley in the loop. Whenprojected against a building with any degree of force the barbed end of the harpoon will embed itself therein and the barbs hold it securely in place, when the cord or rope being on the ground, may be used for a person to descend therefrom or for any object to be lowered, or if found necessary to elevate to the building any fire-escape apparatus or other contrivance necessary for the rescue of life or property.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A projectile for tire escapes, consisting of a harpoon having at its respective ends a barbed head, and a loop with a pulley, a suitable guide upon the shank of the harpoon and a cord or rope connected to said harpoon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimonythat I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
J OHAN MARTIN.
