Description

L. CHAUVIN, Sr. DEVICE FOR STOPPING RUNAWAY HORSES. N0. 494,844.
(No Model.)
Patented Apr. 4, 1893.
.UNITED STATES PATENT LEON OI-IAUVIN, sa, OF cAIno, EGYPT.
DEVlCE FOR STOPPING RUNAWAY HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,844, dated April 4, 1893.
Application filed December 8, 1892. Serial No. 454,493. (No modem To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEON CHAUVIN, Sr., of the city of Cairo, Egypt, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Stopping Runaway Horses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the same, and in which Figure 1 represents a front view of myimproved device; Fig. 2 a section of the same upon theline 12 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 aback or inner face view of the device; and Fig. 4 a view in perspective showing the device applied to the head and face of a horse.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures.
This invention consists in a device of novel construction, substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims, for stopping runaway horses, the same comprising a plate and spring with attached pointed pin or pricker, for arrangement between the nostrils of a horse, under control of the reins and operating to prick or puncture, when required, the nose of the horse, if the animal is running away, and thereby causing the animal to instantly or quickly stop.
In the drawings, the letter a indicates a concave metallic plate of any desired general shape and dimensions, and in which is fixed preferably a flat spiral spring I), represented broken away or shown only in part in Fig. 2, and which carries at its inner end a sleeve 0 that allows of the passage through it of a pointed pin or pricker cl fixed to the center of the plate a. Applied also or secured to the inner side of the plate a is a pull plate 6 made up of a series of arms terminating at their outer ends in ringsfwhich serve to keep the whole device in place. The lower arms of this plate 6 are extended and bent in such a manner as to form slide channels g in which pass the reins h fastened to the lower rings f and so as to prevent the reins h from incolnmoding the horse. The
upper rings f receive straps or cords which are attached to the nose band that is connected in its turn with the forehead band Z by a cross piece m, the point of crossing of which is furnished with a plate or rosette n.
hen the whole device is in position on the horse as shown in Fig. 4E, and the end of the spring 7) carrying the sleeve 0 is applled between the nostrils of the horse, then by pulling on the plate through the medium of the reins and the armed pull plate e, the spring b becomes compressed or forced inward, and in consequence the pointed pin or pricker d is made to pass through the sleeve 0 and to prick the horse on the end of its nose between the nostrils. The plate Cb may if desired be ornamented in any desired manner; and the invention is not restricted to a single pointed pin or pricker, as it will be obvious two or more may be attached to produce a like or more powerful effect, and this without changing the principle or character of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In devices for stopping runaway horses, the combination with the plate a and plate 6 having ringsffor attachment of the reins and straps at the head of the animal, of the spring I) and pointed pin or pricker cl carried by said plate a, for operation, substantially as herein described.
2. In a device for stopping runaway horses, the combination of the'plate a provided with the pin or pricker d projecting from its inner face, the plate e secured to the plate a and provided with the ringsf, the spring I) having one end secured to the inner face of the plate a, and the sleeve 0 secured to the outer end of the spring, substantially as described.
3. In a device for stopping runaway horses, substantially of the character described, the armed pull plate 6 having attached rings f and provided with slide channels adapted to receive the ends of the reins and their attached rings, within them, in combination with a pin or pricker, and a spring secured to the inner face of the said plate essentially as shown and herein set forth.
The foregoing specification of my apparatus serving to stop runaway horses signed by me this l2th day of November, 1892.
