Description
NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.,
Jo-IN MCCARTHY, on sYRAoUsn, NEW YORK.
CASKET-HAN DLE.
SPECIFIGATION formng part of Letters Patent No. 494,822, dated April 4, 1893.
Original application filed February 29, 1892, erial No. 423,159. Divided and this application filed June 23, 1892. erial No.
.T0 all witam it may con/cera:
Be it known that I, JOHN MCCARTHY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Casket-Handles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accornpanying drawing's, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to handles for trunks, boxes, caskets and analogous receptacles, in which the handles are adapted to be shut down when not in use; and which are provided with a relief bar to rednce the strain upon the hinge pins by which the handle bar or its arms are connected to the body plate, or to the side of 'the receptacle.
My object is to produce a handle adapted to be folded down, to which a straiu relieving bar is connected, said bar being adapted to traverse an opening through the side of the receptacle, when the handle is raised or lowered and provided with a head Operating as a stop to the raising of such handle beyond a certain point, when said bar becomes an auxiliary support to the handle, and to a certain extent 'relieve the hinge pin in the joint between the handle bar, or its arms, and the body plate, from the strain of the weight.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter desoribed and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed.
This application is filed as a division of an application filed by me February 29, 1892, Serial No. 423,159, for casket handles, and for` the remainder of which application, after the elimination of this invention, a patent was allowed to nie April 1, 1892. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fignre 1, is a front elevaton of the handle, shut down. Fig. 2, is a Vertical transverse sectional elevation of the same opened or raised up. Fig. 3, is a rear elevation of part of the side of the receptacle, showing the stop (No model.)
plate seated therein orsecured thereto. Fig. 4, is a front elevation of part of the side of the receptacle with the handle-body plate secured there-to, and showing the aperture through said side, and omitting the handle bar.
A-, is part of the side of a box or like receptacle and ais the body plate, to which an arm -bof the handle cis hinged in the usual manner. A relief or anxiliary sup porting bar -dis rigidly or loosely connected to the handle bar, and its free end passes loosely through the aperture -e'- in the side of the box and upon its inner end is provided with a head -e'-, adapted to engage with the inner face of the side of the box, or with a stop-plate --7-, secnred thereon, when the handle bar is raised. This aperture may be provided with a lining mif desired.
The stop-plate consists of a body provided With a notch -h'-, adapting said plate to straddle the relief bar behind its head, and also has one edge tapered, in order to enable me to adj ust said plate, properly, with relation to the traversing movexnents of the relief bar through said aperture when the handle bar is raised to bring the head against the inside of the box or the plate, or lowered to bring the handle against the outside thereof, when the relief bar is projected into the box.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the handle bar, its arm, and the body plate to which said arm is hinged, of a relief bar connected to the handle bar or its arm, and passing through an aperture in the side of the receptacle, and provided with a head upon its inner end.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of June, 1892.
JOHN MCCARTHY.
In presence of- C. W. SMITH, HOWARD P. DENIsoN.
