SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,734, dated April 4, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL ADAMS CRAW- FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsyl vania, have invented certain newand useful Improvements inVVindow- Sash Lifters and Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a sash-lifter, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings; and the object of the invention is to provide a device to lift a sash and lock, or hold it in such lifted position without pawl and ratchet.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sash lifter which will automatically lock itself and therefore the sash as soon as the crank or operating handle is left free, or as soon as the operators hand has let go the said handle.
In the accompanying drawings formingpart of this application; Figure l is a front view of part of a window frame and sash with my lifter applied. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the lifter unlocked. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof, locked. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the casing of the lifter. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the inclosing plate, and Fig.
' 6 is a perspective view of the operating shaft with its crank handle partly broken.
The same reference numerals denote the same parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
The casing 1 is set into the edge of the window frame 2, with the teeth of the cog wheel 3 projecting slightly through the inclosing plate at, to engage a rack bar 5 upon the window sash 6. The operating handle 7 projects through the side of the window frame in a convenient position to be operated. The casing 1 is cast all in one piece with the end flanges 8, a journal bearing 9 for the shaft 10, and a large opening 11 opposite said bearing through which said shaft is inserted into the casing. Upon the inner face of one side of the casing, surrounding the opening 11, and cast integral with said face are a series of projections or lugs 12. Near the bearing of the shaft, and upon its square portion is mounted the cog wheel 3 so that the shaft is free to slide therein. Through said portion is run a pin 13, and between the cog wheel and the pin, upon the square portion of the said shaft is located a spiral spring 14. This spring forces the shaft to slide, and therefore the pin into engagement with the projections or lugs 12, and keeps the lifter, and hence the window sash locked, until the operating handie is pushed inward, which compresses the spring and disengages the pin and lugs, leaving said hand lever and shaft free to be turned, which revolves the cog wheel and lifts or lowers the window sash.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. In a sash fastener and lifter the casing having an opening in each side upon the same horizontal plane to receive a shaft, and the lugs formed in the same piece with the casing around one of said openings and projecting at right anglesfrom the side of the casing, to be engaged by a pin extending through the shaft, in combination with said pin and shaft, as set forth.
2. In a sash fastener and lifter, the casing having an opening in one of its sides, to form the shaft bearing, and the other side having a larger opening on the same horizontal plane with the said bearing opening, and provided with projections or lugs upon its inner face surrounding the larger opening, the shaft having a pin extending at right angles therethrough, the cog wheel located upon the shaft and the spiral spring surrounding the shaft and having its pressure bearing parts upon the said casing and pin, substantially as set forth.
3. In a combined sash fastener and lifter, the casing, the lugs upon its inner face formed in the same piece with the casing, the shaft, and the pin extending through the shaft and adapted to engage the said lugs, in combination with the cog wheel loosely located upon said shaft, and the spiral spring surrounding the shaft between the said pin and cog wheel, substantially as set forth.
