SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,704, dated April 4, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J ENs HANSEN, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W'aiters Stands, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description.

The object of my invention is to obtain a stand on which dishes or other articles can be placed for the purpose of exhibition, or for other purposes, to obtain a stand which can be readily handled so that any one of the dishes or other articles placed thereon can be easily removed without disturbing the remaining dishes or other articles: and further, to obtain a stand which shall be durable and of, comparatively cheap construction.

I have illustrated my invention by the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1, is a side-elevation of a stand embodying my invention, with a portion thereof shown in cross-section Fig. 2, a top plan view of the stand embodying my invention; Fig. 3, a sectional View on line 33 of Fig. 1, viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows; Fig. 4, a plan view of one of the principal elements of the device embodying the invention on an enlarged scale; Fig. 5, a sectional View thereon on line 55 of Fig. 4, viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows; Fig. 6, a sectional View on line 6-6 of Fig. 4, viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows; and Fig. 7, a sectional View of the lower part of the standard of the device showing the manner in which the supporting legs are secured to such standard.

Similar letters of reference are used to indicate similar parts where more than one view thereof is shown.

A is the standard of the device embodying my invention and is preferably constructed of metal tubing so as to enable me to readily attach the handle of the device thereto.

B is the handle, and b is a rod extending from the handle B downward through standard A and b b are nuts on rod 19 at the lower end thereof, serving to maintain it in position in such standard A.

O is a waiter adapted to hold articles placed thereon, such waiter being supported in a ring D.

D, D, D, are arms extending from ring D inwardly to hub D such hub being rotatably mounted on standard'A.

E, is a stop, movable on standard A, but adapted to be rigidly secured in any desired position on such standard by the tightening 6c of set-screw e therein against standard A.

E, E, E E E E, are respectively like stops as stop E on standard A and are respectively secured in any desired position by the respective set-screws e, e, 6 e e e These several stops serve to hold in any desired position on standard A the rotatable clamps and arms forming dish holders to be hereinafter described.

F, is a hub firmly secured to standard A at the lower end thereof, and G, G, G, are the legs of the standard A firmly secured, in the manner illustrated in Fig. 7, in hub F. I prefer to construct the legs G, G, G, respectively, of metal tubing with the respective balls 9, g, g, at the lower end thereof, that is, the end in contact with the object or thing on which the stand is placed.

The several dish holders hereinbefore re ferred to are rotatable on the standard A and which are, respectively, constructed of clamps H and arm I. Clamp I-I consists of two parts or pieces 7%, h, duplicates of each other, one of which pieces I will now proceed to describe.

The bent tubing forming the arms I, I, I, respectively, is placed in the groove h of the respective arms 72, of part h, and two of such parts h are brought together, (as is well illustrated' in Fig. 5,) and firmly secured by bolts J. As'the two parts h, h, are so brought together by the bolts J, (or if preferred, by 5 screws J, Fig. 4,) the radial ridges 72. on such parts h, It, will compress the part of the metal tube forming the respective arms I, I,

I, held between such ridges into about the shape illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, and lettered I. By thus compressing or flattening the tubes forming the arms I, I, I, respectively, such tubes are held firmly so that the arms thereof will extend outward, preferably at right angles to the axis of the hub h of part 72. so that when such hubs are placed on the standard A in the manner illustrated in Figs. 1, 3, 4, and 5, such arms I, I, I, will respectively, extend outward horizontally, or substantially so, from the standard.

1', 71, serve, respectively, both to produce an ornamental appearance and as hearing surfaces on which the dishes or other articles set on the stand can rest.

Clamps II, H, H, are, respectively, rotatable on standard A, and are adjustable vertically thereon by means of the several stops E, E, E, E and E E hereinbefore described.

The device embodying my invention can be used for many purposes and I do not intend when calling the same a waiters stand, to limit myself to the use thereof in the placing thereon of dishes contaiuin g food or other articles, as flower pots or other things can readily be placed in the several holders I, I, I, when desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a vertical standard, a clamp consisting of two parts adjustably secured together rotatably mounted on the standard, and holders formed up of bent tubing held in place in the clamp between the two parts thereof, each of such holders consisting of arms extending partially around the receptacle adapted to be placed thereon; substantially as described.

2. The combination of a vertical standard, a clamp consisting of two parts secured together rotatably mounted on the standard, each of such parts having a hub and arms extending outward from the hub with grooves on one face of the arms and a ridge extending radially across the grooves, and holders formed up of bent tubing held in place in the clamp by being secured between the two parts thereof so that the radial ridge shall compress and partially flatten the tubing when the two parts forming the clamp are secured together; substantially as described.

3. The combination of a vertical standard, a clamp consisting of two parts adjustably secured together, each of such parts having a groove on one of the horizontal faces thereof and radial ridges extending across the groove, and such clamp rotatably mounted on the standard, and holders formed up of bent tube held in place in the grooves in the clamp between the two parts thereof, each of such holders consisting of arms extending partially around the receptacle adapted to be placed thereon, and such holders maintained in a horizontal position by the radial ridges compressing the walls of the tube forming the holders when the two parts forming the clamp are secured together; substantially as described.
