UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. BRIGGS, OF DENISON, TEXAS.
COMBINED CIGAR-TIP CUTTER AND MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,700, dated April 4, 1893.
Application i'lled March 11| 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BRIeGs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denison, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Cigar-Tip Cutter and Match-Safe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined cigartip cutters and match-safes, and consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as will be more fully hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. l
The objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appeal'.
In the drawings--Figure 1 is a perspective View of the cigar-cutter constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2is asimilar view enlarged with the casing removed. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the operating-lever carrying the cutter. Fig. 4is a perspective view of the match-safe or box detached. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation through the center of said match safe or box. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line fc-x of Fig. l.
Similar nulnerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l represents the base of the combined device, having mounted thereon a casing 2, with an upper removable cover 3, the end wall of the casing being slotted as at 4, and the opposite end wall provided near its bottom with an opening 5. Extending transversely across the casing is a shaft 6, on which is mounted a lever 7 having a depending arm 8, and an upward projecting lug 9; said handle being extended rearward through the slot 4 in the end of the casing and having an operating handle 10, by which the entire device is set in motion.
To the front portion of the lever 7 is secured a knife 1l, which consists of a metallic plate of substantially triangular form, though this form is not essentially necessary, and has the upper end thereof bent over the upward projecting lug 9 of said lever, as at 12, and then provided at its edge with a beveled or sharpened portion 13 to form a cutter. The
broadened portion of said knife is provided Serial No. 424.571. (No model.)
with said sharpened edge in order to extend the cutter across a greater surface. Secured in the front edge of said lever, and passing through said cutter or knife 11 is an eye 14 to which the end of a coiled spring l5 is secured, the opposite end-of said coiled spring being attached to an eye 16 secured in the end of the casing 2. The said lever 7 is also formed with an opening large enough to permit said lever to have free rotation on the shaft 6. The lower depending arm 8 of said lever is formed with a suitable eye 17 at the lower end thereof, and has a link 18 secured thereto, and to the rear end of the match safe or box 19. l
The match safe or box 19 comprises a bottom 2O having a slot 2l extending therethrough, and side pieces 23 connected to said bottom and to a front strip 24, to thereby guide the same in its movements outward from and inward to the opening 5in the casing 2. In the front portion of said match safe or box is secured a trough 25, having its front and rear walls 26 and 27 inclined, vthe rear wall, 27, being at a greater inclination than the frontwall 26 to thereby direct the vmatches which are contained in said trough toward the front thereof to be in position for engagement by mechanism hereinafter referred to. Within the casing 2 is a retaining-strip 28, which acts to hold the match safe or box in position, and also to cover the match-containing trough when said safe or box is drawn backward into the casing 2. To the bottom of the casing is pivotaliy secured the lower end of a lever 29, which has a coiled spring 30 secured thereto and to the shaft 6, to retract said lever and draw it back into its normal position. The free end of said lever passes through a slot 31, formed in the end of the casing above the opening 5, and is constructed with a bifurcation 32, having sharpened fingers 33 which are adapted to be forced into the aforesaid match-containing trough to pick up a match therefrom and hold it in elevated position after the match safe or box has been drawn backwardly into the easing 2. This lever is constructed of suitable material, preferably metal, and is irregularly curved, having the bottom thereof, as at 34, adjacent to its pivotal connection formed straight, and from thence curved upward to a portion 35,
IOO
which is again formed nearly straight and somewhat at an angle to the lower portion thereof, and from said latter portion 35 the lever is regularly curved, as at 3G, to bring the fingers 33 with equal bearing directly in a vertical plane into the trough 25, and thereby provide for a more ready engagement with the matches contained in said trough.
The link 18 has one member 37 extending across the slot 2l in the bottom 2O of said match safe or box 19, and is adapted to cngage the lower rear portion of the lever 29, said leverbeing attached to the bottom of the casing in such position as to have the walls of the slot 2O equally distant from opposite sides thereof. Vhen the member 37 of the link 18 first bears against the lever 29, it strikes the lower curved part thereof, slightly raises it until it bears against the straight portion 3i thereof which completely forces the fingers 33 on the end of said lever into the trough 25 of the match safe or box 1S).
W hen the lever 7 is depressed, it forces the link 1S forward, and at the same time shoves the match safe or box 19 outward from the casing 2 through the opening 5 thereof, and simultaneously therewith in the manner hereinbefore speciiied, the lever 29 is caused to operate and gradually lower its lingers 33 into the trough 25 of said match safe or box 19. The match safe or box 19 is forced outward some distance before the said lever 29 commences to move to thereby prevent interference of the several parts. As the said lever 7 is operated, it draws backward on the coiled spring 15, and when said lever is released said coiled spring retracts, thereby restoring the parts to their normal position in the casing 2. The coiled spring 30 secured to the lever 2D and to the shaft 6 also at the same time draws said leverbackward into its normal position. XVhen the lever 7 is operated, as set forth, the knife or cutter carried thereby is drawn against the under side of the cover 3 of the casing 2 over openings 3S of various sizes formed in said cover for the insertion of cigar-tips, to thereby cut the tip from the cigar, as will be readily understood.
In the base 1 is formed an opening 39, having a sliding cover a0 for covering the same, and by means of this construction the cigartips may be readily removed from the bottom of the casing. The bottom of said base is also provided with elastic feet 4l,preferably formed of rnbbe1',which provide against sliding movement of said base and at the same time cushion the sanne.
The advantage and utility of the device set forth is apparent, and it will also be understood that many minor changesin the details of construction and arrangement might be made and substituted forthose shown and described without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of my invention.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a horizontal transversely extending shaft having an operating lever secured thereto, a match safe or box attached to and moving in line with the lower end of said lev r, a link connecting the rear portion of said match safe or box with said lever, a coiled spring attached to the upper end of said lever and the casing of the device, and a curved lever forming a picker directly in longitudinal line with the first mentioned lever and connected to the latter bya coiled spring to return it to its normal position, said link operating to force the curved lever outward through the end of the casing, substantially as described.
2. In a combined cigancutter and match safe, the combination of a rocking lever, a match safe or box attached to the lower por- `tion of said rocking lever and moving in longitudinal line therewith, a coiled spring attached to the upper portion of said rocking lever, a curved lever forming a picker, and a coiled spring attached directly to said picker at one end and at its opposite end to said rocking lever, said match safe or box and picker, being moved simultaneously with and in direct longitudinal alignment to said rocking lever, substantially as described.
Adevice of the character described, comprising a rocking lever, a horizontal transversely extending shaft on which said lever is mounted, a box having a slot extending through the bottom thereof arranged in the form of a drawer and providing a match safe, a link connecting thelower part of said rocking lever with the rear of the bottom of said box, said link having a member extending across the slot in said box, a curved lever forming a picker pivotally connected in position within said slotted bottom of the box and adapted to be engaged by the member of the link extending across the slot in said box, and a spring secu red directly to said rocking lever and to said curved lever or picker the operation of said shaft controlling the movement of all of the parts of the device, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. BRIGGS.
