Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. BALL, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Dayton,`

in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Cigar- Tip Cutter and Match Box and Lighter and I do hereby de# clare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in a device comprising a cigar-tip cutter and match box and lighter of that class in which a reciprocating lever, carrying a cutter-blade, moves a sliding plate or plunger upwardly and downwardly through the body of amatch'# receptacle and through the top thereof, bringing up a match on its upper edge in each upward movement and holding it against the under face of an arm or strip, (said match on being withdrawn therefrom lwill be ignited,) in

y which a spring is adapted to hold said lever normally in upward position, and in which provision is made to prevent the matches from crossing or tangling, arranging them straight or parallel in the bottom of the match-box for the plunger to take them up one vat a time.

The object of the invention is the produc-g tion of a device'to expeditiously cut olf the tip-end of a cigar preparatory to smoking, to gather or assemble the cut-oif tips, and to' bring from a receptacle a single match,which, in being taken from the devicewill be ig-` nited and ready for lighting the cigar, the whole constituting a convenient smokers companion.

The elements `of the invention will severally and at large appear in the following description, and will be separately and collectively set forth in the claims.

The purposes of the invention are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, similar reference letters and figures designating like parts throughout thel several views, in which- Figure lis a front elevation` of a device -embodying the elements of the invention.

i In the drawings, A designates a suitable supporting framework or casing mounted on legsor feet a, through which nails or screws l may serve to secure it in position on a table, bar, orcounte'r.` At one end thereof, preferably the left-hand one, is a housing-chamber A', having on its. bottom and movable in and out through'anend wall a drawer a to receive th e cigar tips or ends as they drop from the cutter, while on top, at theother or righthand end of the framework, is a hopper or match-receptacle A2, adapted to receive and vhold the matches to be used and having its upper end or mouth closed by a traporj door a2, h inged along one edge thereof, as` at' 2, andwwhich doorl may be locked whenY so desired (not shown in the drawings) and opened when matches have to be placed thereinto. The bottom of the hopper inclines or slopes downwardwfrom front and rear, forming a valley or longitudinal depression along the top of the right-hand extension of the framework, and in which is situated an opening prolonged downwardly through the body of said eXtenv sion to constitute a guide or passage way a3 for a plunger-plate A3 to move up and down therein, carryin g a match '3 with itin each upward movement,'andv theupper edge of the plunger is provided with a shallow concaved groove a4 to securely hold said match. In the rearward side wall. of the extension is a vertically-disposed slot d5, throughwhich a coni nection or pivot-pin, yet to be described, serves to convey to saidplunger the required motion, while at a prescribed point in the forward side wall and opening into the chamber A before mentioned, is an inwardlyrounded or countersunk aperture @Qin which the cigar ends are inserted for the cutter, yet tobe described, to cut off their tips.

In the rearward portion the bottom of the hopper is provided with vertically-disposed slots a7, through which move agitator-pins a8 to arrange the matches, laying them straight to enter the groove inthe plunger-top when it reaches the lowerstkpoint'in the hopper-bottom, while underneath said bottom are arranged guide-slots a9, in which move the ends of a bar A4, from which said pins as project,

and within the hopper is arranged a tumbler blade or wing A5, having central side gudgeons journaled into the hopper sides. One gudgeon,preferably the left-hand one,extending outwardly beyond the adjacent wall, is provided with a crank-arm am to reciprocally rota-te or shake said blade, helping to lay said matches straight, preventing their crowding at the lowest point, while in the top of the lower portion of the hopper is a slot or opening a, having suihcient extent and through which the plunger passes in carrying the match on its upper end to the igniting-strip, yet to be described.

To the left of the hopper and proj ectin g upwardly from the top of the casing is a column or post (L12, supporting on its upper end a horizontally-placed strip or arm A, extending to the right and having one end securely aixed to said post by a screw or rivet Li, while underneath the strip and secured thereto in any approved manner is a strap-spring A7, having a roughcned under face against which the plunger, before mentioned, brings the required match and which ignites said match when it is withdrawn therefrom.

Underneath the hopper and lying close to the rearward face of the front wall of the framework is arranged an arm or lever B with its left-hand portion within the chamber A', before mentioned, and its extremity pivoted to the framework by a stud and pin 5.A At a point opposite the orifice a, before mentioned, in the forward face of the lever-arm is a dovetailed recess l), into which is fitted a cutterblade B', provided with a vertical slot ZJ, th rough which a screw B2, with an eyed washer b2 and nut on its rearward end, serves to adjustably secure said cutter-blade in place, while a coiled spring B3, having one end secured through the eye of said washer and the other end b3 secured through an eye depending from the under face of the top Wall of the casing, serves to hold said lever normally up, and the right-hand end of the lever is upwardly turned and the extremity thereof iinished with a knob or button b4, on which a downward hand-pressure serves to depress said lever, the spring returning it again to the upward position. To the left of the hopper a partially-coiled link B4 connects the lever with the outer end of the crank-arm am,

before mentioned, giving to the blade A5, also before mentioned, the required reciprocating motion, and below the hopper a coiled spring B5 connects the lever with the agitator-bar A4, likewise before mentioned, giving to the latter the required motion, but in order that the pins as of said bar maybe held in upright position the upper end of said link must be rigidly secured into the body of the bar or soldered thereto, while a link BG has its upper end pivoted to the forward face or side of the lever by a bolt and nut b5 and its lower end, through the slot a5, as shown, pivoted to the plunger-plate A3, before mentioned, whereby the latter is raised or lowered as the lever is elevated or depressed.

It will here be observed that instead of the bar A4 moving the pins a8 through the slots a7 and the tumbler blade or wing A5, here shown and described, bars or flat pieces may be arranged to have their upper ends made to move up and down through said slots to agitate or arrange the matches in the hopper, and the chamber A may have its walls extended underneath the hopper to the righthand end of the framework without departing from the spirit of the invention or introducing any new features, all of which appear to be so evident that it is deemed superfluous to give them separate illustration.

Having now described the invention and ascertained the manner in which it is performed, what is considered new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

A cigar-tip cutter, match-box, and lighter, comprising a casing or framework having a vertical side wall with an aperture through its body and a hopper or match-box on its top at one end thereof, a lever lying adjacent thereto with one end extending beyond the hopper and the other end pivoted to said side wall near the other end thereof, a cutterblade secured to said lever and adapted to move over the adjacent opening of said aperture, a spring having one end secured to the lever and the other end to the casing, a plunger-plate in guideways within said side wall and movable up and down through the body of said hopper and through a slot in the top thereof with pivoted link connections between the adjacent sides of said plate and said lever, a match-igniting strip secured to the adjacent side of an arm extended over the slot in the hopper-top and having one end secured to a projection from said casing, with means provided to agitate or shake the matches within the hopper or match-box, all substantially as described and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
