Description

Il, PETERS, PHOTOJJTHOGRAFHEW. WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MASON PIKE, OF NORTH LEVERETT, MASSACHUSETTS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,436, dated August 15, 1865.
To all whom t may concern.- f
Be it known that I, MnsoN PIKE, of North Leverett, in the county of Franklinand State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side sectional view ot' my invention, taken in the line n: an, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section ot' the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved washing-machine; and it consists ina novel means employed for operating two swinging beaters, whereby the clothes are operated upon in the most perfect manner Iand with but a slight expenditure of power.
The invention also consists'in the employment or use of water-receptacles provided with valves, and arranged in such a manner as to admit of the suds-box being` supplied with water as required.
Arepresentsa iectangnlar framing, in which the suds-box B is placed, the latter having a shat't, O, extending transversely across its upper part,ou which two bars, D D, are sus pended and allowed to swing freely, said bars having pins E passing through their lower parts. These bars and pins serve as beaters to act upon or against the clothes in the sudsbox B, the bot-tom ot'the latter being ot' curved form corresponding to the sweep made by the lower ends ot' the bars l) in their movement back and forth. (See Fig. l.)l
At each end of the suds box B there are springs, F, of curved form,` the clothes being between these springs and the beaters, the former yielding or giving under the action ot' the beaters on the clothes and rendering'the beaters more efficient than they otherwise would be, and at the same timeprevcntin g the clothes being subjected to any undue pressure.
Each bar D has a plate, G, extending down from it at the outer side ot' the suds-bo'x, and these plates G are connected at their lower ends by arms H to arms I on rock-sl1at'ts`J J, which are operated by pitmen K from reverse cranks L on a shaft, M, the latter having its bearings on friction-Wheels N N. This shaft M is provided with atly-Wheel, O, at cach end,
and said shaft is rotated by a band, I), froma shaft, Q. By this arrangement the beaters are l operated with but a veryslght expenditure of power. Y
R R represen are placed in the framing A, one at each end of the sudsbox B. These chambers are pro-` vided attheirlower parts withaseries otl valves, Sthree, more or less-which work on pivots a, andare connected at their upper ends by bars b, to which handles or rods T are attached, the latter passing through one side ofthe framing. By actuating these handles the valves S may be opened and closed and water let into the suds box in greater or less quantity, as may be desired. The suds pass out ot the suds-box through au inclined spout, V. this arrangement the water can be admitted to the clothes in greater or less quantity, as` may" be desired. y x
V represents a clothes-wrm ger,co|n posed of a head. c, which is fitted on the inner end of a shaft, W, the latter passing through one of the, waterchambers It, and having a hand-wheel, X, on its outer end, against which a rod, Y, is made to actor press bymeans ot' a coil-spring,
Z, on a roller, A', in the lower part ot' the framing A, to which the lrod is attached. this head c one end ot' a series of cords, d, is attached, the opposite ends ot' said cords being secured to a plate, c, iitted in a crossbar, f, by the inner side ofthe opposite Watencham bei', It. Thecords d are arranged in the form ot'a tube or hollow cylinder, in which the clothes` to be wrung are placed, aud `the rodY,
2. The water-chzunbers It R, provided with valves S, and ai ranged iu` relation with the suds-box B, substantially as `and for thefpurpose specified. l l y MASON PIKE.
