J. R. STURCTEON.
GHBGKREIN GUIDE.
No. 494,308. Patented Mar. 2a, 189s.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES R. STURGEON, OF CHURUBUSCO, INDIANA.`
CHECKREIN-GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,308, dated March 28, 1893.
Application iiled July 5, 1892.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. STURGEON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Churubusco, in the county of Whitley and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Checkreins; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to harness, and its object is to improve the overdraw check rein attachments. It has been proposed to run said check rein through a metallic guide swiveled upon the crown of the bridle, so as to give the rein free play and permit it to slide back and forth when the horse moves his head. But objections have been raised to this on the ground of its unsightly appearance, the danger of the metallic part breaking and injuring the animal, the tangling and pulling out of the main and fore locks, and the like. My invention aims to avoid these objections, and to provide a neat, durable and efficient guide which will not chafe the animal, nor permit the hair to be caught in the check rein or guide.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows my improved check rein guide in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view and Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation.
A piece of leather A, is suitably secured at one end to the crown band B of the bridle. The sides of the piece are cut out in curves a so that it may lie snugly between the ears of the horse, as shown. The front end of the piece is provided with loops a encircling the brow band C. The guide for the over-draw check rein D is a strip E of leather bent into Serial No. 439,052. (No model.)
an inverted rectangular trough and having {ianges e by which it is stitched or riveted to the piece -A midway between the curves a. To still further strengthen it, ears e may be formed at the upper end of the Hanges e, and stitched to the piece A. The stitching may be covered on the under side if desired, to make a smooth surface neXt the animals head.
The check rein D passes easily through the tubular guide formed by the piece Aand bent strip E, and the absence of all metallic parts, swiveled tubes, and the like, prevent the mane or forelock of the horse from getting caught and tangled, while the length of the guide E prevents the check rein from kinking or fouling. durable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A guide for an overdraw check rein consisting of the piece A having curved sides c and loops et depending from the front of said piece, and the trough-shaped strip E lying midway between said curved sides c, and having flanges e stitched to said piece A, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the crown-band B and the brow band C of la. piece of leather A secured at one end to the crown band, and adapted to lie dat between the horses ears, and provided with loops a encircling the brow band, and a trough-shaped strip of leather E lying along the middle of said piece A, and having flanges e stitched to said piece, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix mysgnature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES R. STURGEON.
The whole device is neat, light and Witnesses:
BRENTON S. HoLLoPETER, JAMES W. SQUIREs.
