CASTING FOR ROPE HALTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,777, dated December 22, 1891-.
Application filed April 18, 1391- Serial No. 389,522- (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE C. EDWARDS and BURNETT V. BUFFINGTON, both of Marysville, Union county, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Casting for Rope Halters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to halt-ers, and more particularly to an improved casting-piece to which a single piece of rope is attached to produce the throat latch and nose-strap, the free end of the rope forming the hitching-strap, the object of the invention being to provide a cheap and simple casting, which is so constructed and arranged that it will not annoy the animal, and it is also constructed in such form that the man nor of using it will be readily perceived.
lVith these objects in view our invention consists in the peculiar construction of the parts and the novel combination or arrangement of the same, all of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved halter as applied and used. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the halter.
In the practical embodiment of our invention we employ a casting A, comprising a main or body portion a, which body portion is provided at its forward end with oppositely-projecting lateral arms a, thus forming a T-shaped forward portion. Near the forward end of the body portion a is produced an aperture 0. and near the outer ends of the arms a are produced the apertures a the arms and body portion being preferably enlarged wherethe apertures are produced to prevent weakening the casting. The rear end of the main or body portion Ct is provided with rearwardly-projecting oblique arms (0, forming a forked or Y-shaped rear end of the casting, and near the rear end of the body portion is also produced an aperture a while near the endsof the oblique arms are produced the apertures a". A rope B is passed through the several apertures and around the various arms, producing the throat-latch I), the nosestrap Z), and the hitching-strap IF, the free end of the throat-latch beingprovided with a snap-hook In attaching the rope to the casting the end of the rope is passed through one of the apertures 66 11111116 rear arm a from the upper side and drawn through a sufficient distance to leave enough remaining to form the throat-latch b, the
snap-hook being adapted to engage the opposite aperture a after said rope has been passed around an animals head. The end of the rope after being passed through theaperture ct is passed up through the aperture o in the rear end of the body portion, and is then passed down through the aperture (1 at the forward end of the body a and up through the aperture a in the arm a adjacentto the arm a, through which the rope was first passed. The rope is then carried across to the opposite aperture (L3, forming the nose strap 1), and it is then passed up through the aperture a and beneath the rope as it passes down through said aperture. The rope is then carried over the forward end of the body portion, and up again through the aperture a and out through the loop b formed at the forward end of the body, thus producing a knot, which retains the'rope in its proper place of arrangement with the casting. If desired, the rope may be passed through in the reverse order, but preserving the same arrangement. The forward arms a are preferably curved upwardly, thereby forming a support for the nose-strap.
Although we have spoken of the part A as a casting, and prefer to make the same of cast metal, it is evident that it may be made of wroughtmetal or struck up from thick sheet metal, the peculiar construction of the piece and the arrangement of the rope thereon being the essential features whereby an adjustable halter of cheap and simple construction is provided.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved casting for halters, consisting of main or body portion, having apertures near its forward and rear ends, the laterallyprojecting and upwardly curved forward arms having apertures near their outer ends, and the obliquely-projecting rear arms having apertures near their outer ends, substantially as and for the purposes described.
