PORTABLE ALTAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,790, dated March 21, 1893.
Application filed June 28, 1892.
To all whom it may concern' i drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved portable altar for funeral purposes, and consists in certain details of construction, and combination of parts as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l, is a front elevation of my improved portable altar, which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation of the same folded, or made portable. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same.
In the drawings, l indicates a base-piece having compartments 6 and 7 therein separated by partitions. These compartments may have biblical scenes painted in the background and religious figures may occupy the foreground, as shown. The base-piece l is provided with a removable ornamented top portion 8, having detachably secured thereto a cross 9. Secured at right angles to the base piece is a ledge 18 having hinged thereto at 4 a front board 2 suitably ornamented with panels and pilasters, which when lowered serve to support the entire structure, and when closed cover the front of the altar as shown in Fig. 2. The ledge 1S serves as one side of the box when the altar is closed. Attached by hinges 5 to the ends of said ledge 1S are pieces 3, which also serve to support the altar when opened, and when closed act as the sides of the box containing the altar. 2. A portable altar comprising a base piece having compartments therein,cand1esupports secured to the partitions of said compartments, a removable ornamental top piece havinga detachable cross secured thereto, a ledge secured at right angles to said base piece, having an ornamental front board hinged thereto, hooks on said front board adapted to engage eyes in said base-piece when the altar is closed, end pieces hinged to the edge of said ledge provided with hooks adapted to engage eyes on said front board when the altar is opened, and handles on said end piece, the whole adapted to be folded up as described.
