SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,280, dated March 14:, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY MORRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salida, in the county of Ohaftee and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Surgical Irrigating-Basin, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to surgical irrigating basins; and it has for its object to provide an improved basin of this character especially adapted for the use of patients, while in bed, or in the semi-prone position, and is so adapted as to be used for vaginal or rectal injections, and also may be employed as a urinal.

To this end the object of the invention is to construct a basin of this character wherein the greatest comfort is afiorded the patient While at the same time the operations are in nowise interfered with.

With these and many other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings;-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a surgical basin constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same, on the line 22 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the accompanying drawings; A represents a segmental or are inflatable cushion-rim, which rim is constructed of rubber, cloth inserted, and incloses a hollow air space which is designed to be filled out with air to inflate the rim when the device is in use, by means of the air cock B, connected to the rim and communicating with the interior thereof at a suitable point. The said cock is of any ordinary construction and also provides means for the exhaustion of the air from the rim.

The said bowl 0 is provided with an extended front wall D, which forms a front dam for the bowl and prevents the liquid from running over the front of the basin, while at the same time said front wall, although being made of stiff rubber as the remainder of the bowl, can be moved to adjust the device to the patient. A central discharge opening E leads from the bottom of the basin and has connected therewith the discharge hose or tube F adapted to carry the liquid to a chamber or pail.

Now it will be readily seen that when in use, the inflated rim forms a hip rest to support the hips and back during the operation and also to raise the body sufficiently from the bed so that the liquids can escape from the bowl of the basin for whatever use the same may be adapted, although particularly employedin vaginal irrigations.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a surgical basin, a segmental inflatable cushion rim, and a curved or rounded bowl partly inclosed by said rim and having a central bottom discharge opening, substantially as set forth.

2. In a surgical basin, a segmental inflatable cushion rim, and afixed central front discharge basin partly inclosed by and forming an intermediate part of said rim and having an integral upwardly extended dam which is formed by an extension of the front side of the bowl, substantially as set forth.
