To all whom it may concern: v

Be it known t-hat l, JOSEPH SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel and Keg Scrubbing Machines, of which the following is a specilication.

This invention relates to machines forscrubbing and cleaning the outside of barrels and kegs, especially adapted for breweries, and consists in the novel constructions and combinations substantially as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my new barrel and keg scrubbing machine. Fig.2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the ieXible or spring wheels which carry and rotate the barrel. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of same.

A A represent two standards or posts firmly bolted to a suitable base frame, which support all the Working parts of the machine.

B B are two parallel shafts having their bearings in boxes b, b, located low down in the said posts, and they extend beyond the post at the left hand of the machine and are supported in pillar blocks B B', and are provided with a tight and a loose pulley b b on one of said shafts. Y

C, C, are sprocket wheels tixed on the said shafts connected by a chain belt, by means of which both shafts are made to revolve in unison, motion being applied to the pulley.

D D are spring wheels fixed on the shafts B B, at their middle portion, and may be adjusted thereon for more or less spread from. each other, and are provided for holding and' rotating the barrel, during the scrubbing performance. These wheels consist, as will be seen by reference to Figs. 3 and 4, of beveled rims d, curved spring spokes d2, and a clamp hub d3. The hub is made with side recesses in which the spokes are set and are held firmly by a plate or ring, d4, placed on the hub and secured by bolts d5, this permits for adjustment of the springs in the hub for more or less tension as may be required. These spring wheels, by their flexibility, are designed for allowing for a yielding to pressure as the barrel is pressed upon by the brushes, to accom modate them to inequalities of the barrel hoops, or otherwise.

E is a long brush held in a frame E', over the barrel, by bolts e, e. The ends of said frame are supported in slots in the standards, and the brush frame is also adjustably held by means of links or connecting bars ff, pivotally attached to levers F F adjustably fulcrumed to a slotted arm g, on the cross-head G, by a bolt and thumb nut g', the fixed ends of said levers are held in place under crossbolts in lugs f f', at each end of the crosshead. One of said levers F is provided with va handle F for convenience of raising and lowering the brush E for adjustment to the size of barrel or keg to be operated upon, the thumbnut g being loosened to permit of the movement, and again tightened when adj usted. H I-I are end brushes supported 1n clamps, h, h, on the corners of the frames Il, set 1n the slots in the standards AA, `which are also made adjustable outwardly and inwardly by means of levers J, J, fulcrumed at their mlddle part to lugs jj, on the standards A, the lower ends of which are joined by llnks or connecting rods K K, with the sliding bars L L, attached to the lower corners of the brush frames I, I, and which lie side by side or lap by each other. The top ends of the said le` vers J J, are connected bylinks or connecting vbars M M, with a hand lever N, fulcrumed to the cross-head G on a bolt having a thumbnut n by which the lever N may be fastened in place. The end brushes H H are also made adjustable in height to accomodate them to different sizes of barrels and kegs, by means as follows:

O O are links or connecting rods attached to the outer corners of the brush frames I I, having their upper ends connected to levers P P, fulcru med at their middle part to a slotted arm Q on the cross-head G, by a bolt and thumbnut R, the fixed ends of said levers P P are held in place under the cross bolts inl the lugs f f', at each end of said cross head in like manner to F F. One of the levers P is provided with a handle P for the convenience of moving the levers when adjusting the brushes.

For supplying Water for scrubbing the bar rel, pipes may be provided and suitably ar- IOO ranged for discharging Water on the barrel or for supplying the brushes.

From the foregoing it will be seen that with this machine the brushes are easily and readily adjusted to the requirement of the barrel or keg to be scrubbed. It will also readily be seen that the barrels or kegs are simply placed on the carrying Wheels D D, rapidly revolved thereby, so that the barrel is very quickly scrubbed and removed, greatly facilitating this Work.

Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a barrel scrubbing machine the coinbination with standards A A and crosshead G of brush holder EV having its ends adjust ably supported in the guides in standards A A, links ff connecting it with levers F F, having their ends fulcrumed at f,f, at `the ends of the crosshead G, and their middle parts adj ustably held in slotted arm g on the crosshead by a clalnpbolt and nut g', substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a barrel scrubbing machine the combination with the supporting standards A A of the end brush holding frames I I, adjustably coupled together by the lapping bars L L, levers .I J, fulcrumed at 7' 'y' to the standards, their lower ends connected by links K K with the bars L L and their upper ends connected by links M M with handle lever N fulcrumed to the cross head G, and adapted for adjusting the end brushes H H, as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a barrel scrubbing` machine the combination with the end brush frames I I, of the links O O, connecting them with levers P P, adjustably fulcrumed to the cross head G, for elevating and adjusting the end brushes H I-I to different levels, as and for the purpose specified. y l
