To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, KENNEDY O. BULLARD,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Milledgeville, in the county of Baldwin and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Combined Trace-Support and Rein- Guide, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a combined tracesupport and plow-rein guide; and the objects of the invention are to provide a buckle adapted to be readily applied to the backband of a plow-harness, and in addition to forming a support for the chain, to also constitute aguide and support for the rein, whereby the same is prevented from falling te the ground and being trampled upon or tangled in the feet of the horse.

Other-objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, andthe novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined chain-support and rein-guide constructed in accordance with myinvention, the same being'in position upon a backband. Fig. 2 is a sectionalview of the device.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in both the figures of the drawings.

In practicing my invention, I prefer to cast the entire device integral, and the same consists of a buckle-frame, which may be of any desired construction, tlie only essential being that it be provided with the chain-supporting hook and the rein-guiding eye.`

In the present instance, l designates the upper cross-bar of the buckle frame, from which depend the end-bars 2, the lower ends of the latter being connected by the irregularly-shaped depending lower bar 8, at the front and center of which an outwardly, upwardly and inwardly curved trace-engaging hook 4 is formed, the saine being designed t-o engage a proper link of a chain-trace. The

vertical end-bars 2 are connected by a crossbar 5, from which extend suitable prongs 6, for engaging with the backband 7, which is passed between the bars l and 5 over the front of the latter, and between it and the lower bar 3.

Upon the upper cross-bar l there is preferably cast an elongated sleeve 8, the same being of a length less than the buckle-frame, and having its ends flared and the central portion thereof contracted. This sleeve constitutes a guide and support for the plowrein, to prevent the wearing of which the sleeve is flared at its ends, and rounded, as mentioned. The said sleeve is cast integral with the top bar of the buckle and stands partially above the said bar, outward therefrom over the prongs 6 and the outer side of said buckle, by means of which therein passing through the sleeve is held away from contact with any of the adjacent parts. By means of the elongated form ot' the sleeve an extended support aswell asa guide is provided, and the dared ends and contracted central portion prevent the rein with buckles or joints from being caught at any point and insure a movement thereof through the sleeve.

It will be seen that the device as thus described may be adjusted at any suitable height along the backband, and when in position will form au efficient means for supporting the chain-trace and plow-rein, preventing them both from dragging the ground and becoming tangled with the feet of the animal.

I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim is The herein described combined chain-trace support and plow-rein guide, consisting of a buckle-frame adjustably mounted on a backband and comprising an upper bar and a lower chain engaging hook, and a rein guide integrally formed and parallel with the center of said upper bar and extending partially above and below the same and outward over the upper front portion of the buckle, said guide being in the form of an elongated sleeve with opposite flared ends and a central contracted portion to form a support and an unobstructing guide for the rein passing therethrough, substantially as described.
