COVER-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,329, dated February 21, 1893.

Be it known that I, MARTHA A. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montclair, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Cover-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in cover holders for barrels, kettles, cans, pots, pans, and other receptacles.

The object of the present invention is to provide a cover holder of simple and economical construction adapted to be readily adj usted to various sized receptacles to hold the covers thereon and enable their contents to be drained without losing any of the latter, and without causing the operator to come in contact with the liquid drained and be injured thereby.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cover holder constructed in accordance with this invention and shown in operative position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cover holder detached from the vessel. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a sectional View.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a cover holder composed of similar sliding sections 2 that are constructed of wire and are adapted to be fitted over the cover 3 of a vessel or receptacle 4: to securely clamp the cover in place and prevent the same accidentally slipping from the vessel or receptacle while the contents of the latter are be ing drained, and to prevent any liability of the operators hands coming in contact with the liquid drained and beinginjured thereby, should the liquid be hot or acidulated or otherwise dangerous. The sliding sections 2 are constructed of wire or similar material, that is sufficiently light and possesses the requisite strength to withstand the strains incident to its use, and the said wire is bent intermediate of its ends to form a clampingjaw or portion 5 and the sides 6. tion 5 consists of a transverse bar which is approximately straight but which may be slightly curved to conform to the sides of a vessel, and the inclined portions 7 that are arranged at a slight angle to the side 6 and enable the clamping jaw to extend around the edge of the cover and engage the side of the vessel and thereby securely retain the cover in place. The sides 6 converge from the clamping jaw 5 to a point about midway their length, and from that point to their ends 8 are parallel, and are adapted to slide longitudinally within a sleeve 9 that holds the sections together and enables them to be adjusted to fit any size vessel. The ends 8 of the sides 6 are bent up at right angles and soldered or otherwise secured together and form handles to facilitate the adjustment of the sections and to prevent them being entirely separated from the sleeve. The sleeve 9 has fiattened sides and rounded ends and the parallel portions 10 of the sides 6 are adapted to slide upon each other and fit snugly within the sleeves.

It will readily be seen that the cover holders are simple and inexpensive in construction, adapted to be readily adjusted to different size vessels and are capable of securely retaining the covers in place.

What I claim is 1. A cover holder consisting of the similar sections sliding longitudinally upon each other and provided at their opposite ends with clamping jaws or portions adapted to fit over a cover and engage the sides of the vessel, and the sleeve seen ring the sections together, substantially as described.

2. A cover holder consisting of similar sections each constructed of a single piece of wire or similar material and provided at their opposite ends with clamping jaws or portions, and the sleeve surrounding the sides of the sections and enabling the latter to be adjusted longitudinally, substantially as described.

3. A cover holder comprising the two similar sections each constructed of a single piece of wire or similar material and provided at their opposite ends with clamping jaws or portions and converging from the clamping portions, and provided with parallel portions,
