SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,269, dated February 21, 18913.

To all whom, irl may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW E. CARLSON, of Vallace, in the county of Shoshone and State of Idaho,haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Mechanical Indexes, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a more convenient index than the one which is constructed in book form as ordinarily used.

It consists in a stand with central vertical shaft, and a series of radially arranged wings attached to a cylindrical Centex' and revolving on the vertical shaft, the said wings being formed of metal frames with detachable cards bearing the names slipped into the frame, and protected and kept clean by a glass or mica facing as hereinafter fully described. y

Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section and Fig. 2 isa plan View.

In the drawings A represents the base or stand which is provided with a vertical central shaft B. The revolving index consists of a cylindrical central part C and radial wings D. The vertical shaft passes through the cylindrical center, and has a finial E screwed upon its upper end to hold the index on, but still allow it to revolve. Each wing consists of two vertical plates set at a very acute angle at their outer edges, and rigidly fixed to the cylindrical center at their inner edges. Along the outer, bottom, and inner edges of each face or page of the wing is an inturned flange aac, which form a pocket or frame into which is slid from the top the card E which bears the names and pages of the petty and general ledger. On the outer faces of these cards and also secured by the same fianges are transparent covers F of glass, mica, or other similar material. Each wing D, it will be seen, has two faces or pages, and they all together afford space for a great number of names which are very conveniently brought into view by a touch of the finger.

To increase the capacity of the index, I hinge between the fixed wingsan alternating series of swinging wings D only one of which is shown which are constructed in the same manner as the rigid wings, except that they transparent panels o1' panes arranged in said keepers; combined with and arranged to revolve upon a central supporting shaft'substantially as shown and described.

2. A revolving mechanical index, consisting of the combination of a series of rigid radial wings each having two faces arranged at an acute angle with lianged marginal keepers, and a cylindrical body or center; detachable cards and transparent panes arranged within the keepers; and a central supporting shaft substantially as shown and described. V

3. A revolving mechanical index consisting of a series of rigid radial wings having card receiving spaces on each of its faces, and a series of alternating pivoted and swinging Wings with card spaces arranged between the rigid Wings, and a central supporting stand substantially as shown and described.
