HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,210, dated February 21, 1893. Applioationrled June 2, 1892. Serial No. 435,244. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDDIE C. KIMBALL,a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harnesses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in harness, and it has for its general object to provide a breeching, a breast collar orA other piece of harness in which folds are used, of
`such construction that the face strap or part of the piece which is designed to bear against the body of the animal, will be perfectly smooth so as not to chafe or rub the animal.
With the foregoing end in view the novelty of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in whichz Figure l is a perspective view, partly in transverse section, of a breast collar constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View illustrating the manner of connecting the outer layer orstrap to the burr or foundation pieces. Fig. 3 is a transverse section showing the relative positions of the face strap and the burr or foundation pieces when the same are connected together; and, Fig. 4: is a similar view showing the burr or foundation pieces partly turned up into their proper positions.
In tlfe said drawings, similar letters desig-` nate corresponding parts throughout the several views, referring to which:
A indicates the burr or foundation pieces of my improved breast collar which are preferably formed from two strips of heavy leather; and B indicates the face strap which is designed to bear against the body of the animal bearing the harness. This face strap is preferably connected by stitches c or otherwise to the upper sides of the burr or foundation pieces A, While the parts are in the relative positions shown in Fig. 3; so that when the said burr or foundation pieces are carried upward" and inward and are laid edge to edge within the face strap, as better shown in Fig. 2, of the drawings, the rolls b, will be formed to cover and protect the stitches c. After the burror foundation pieces have been laid Within the rolled edges of the face strap, the contiguous edges of the said pieces are connected by suitable stitches as a, which preferably do not extend entirely through. the pieces.
O indicates the outer layer or strap of my improved breast collar. This strap lies between the rolling edges b of the face strap B, and against the foundation pieces A. It is laced or stitched to said foundation pieces, in substantially the manner shown in Fig. 2, whereby the stitches c', do not pass into or through the face strap and therefore said face strap is left entirely smooth on its outside. In order to prevent any of the stitches c from showing on the outside of the strap C, I prefer to slit the edges of said strap and to so form the stitches that they Will lie Within the said slits, substantially as shown in Figs. l and 2. p
When the parts forming my breast collar are connected together, as shown in Fig. ll of the drawings, it will be seen that the edges of the upper walls of the slits in the outer layer or st rap O will impinge against the rolling edges of the face strap B and will inclose and protect the stitches c from the action of the weather whereby the usefulness of the breast collar will be prolonged.
By my improved construction it will be seen that not only are all the connecting stitches protected from the weather, from frictional wear and from perspiration, but the face strap which bears against the skin of the animal is smooth from stitches or other slight projections calculated to chafe and rub the skin.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my improved breast collar so as to enable others skilled in the art to thoroughly understand and appreciate the same, I do not desire to be confined to such construction and relative arrangements, as such changes or modifications may be made as" fairly fall withinthe scope of myinvention.
IOO
Having thus described my invention, what I daim es new, en@ desire f-Q $812,111.10 by Letters Patent, isf? l.
