VEHICLE- TONGUE.

SPEGIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,013, dated February 21, 1893.

Application filed July 25, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. HANNA,a citizen of the United States, residing at Henry, in the county of Marshall and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Tongues; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in vehicle tongues.

The object of the invention is to provide a tongue which shall combine the advantages of lightness and strength.

In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the tongue and parts. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the tongue, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a strengthening used on the device, while Fig. 4 represents a sectional view of the tongue and bar through dotted lines X X Figs. 1, 2 and 3.

A represents the body of the tongue which may be the same thickness throughout its entire length as shown in Fig. 1.

The bar B does not reach to the extreme ends of the tongue, 0n the contrary considerable distance is left between the ends of the parts and on the forward end of the tongue is secured the usual strap D for holding the neck yoke in position. The perpendicular portion F butts up against the forward end of the bar B and a bolt or rivet passes through the whole rendering it perfectly rigid. The said strap D is somewhat exaggerated in size to more clearly show the construction.

I claim In a vehicle tongue, the beam A, tapering from its rear end to its forward end in the width thereof and having secured to its underside a tapering bar B to conform to the taper of the said beam A andtapering from its rear end to its forward endof the thickness thereof, and a strap D secured to the forward end of the beam A and bar B and having its perpendicular portion F abutting against the end of said bar B substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth and described.
