CARRIAG E-TOP CRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 491,869, dated February 14, 1893.
Application filed October 13, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BURRITT B. BREED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Top Crates, of which the following is a specification.
- My invention relates to the method of crating carriage tops.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a crate into which the top can be incased in the stretched or open position.
Another object of my invention is to provide an open space between the legs of the crate so that two or more crates may be nested together and occupy much less space in shipping. I
The various features of my invention are fully set forth in the description of the ac companying drawings making a part of this specification, in which,

The crate is composed of three parts; towit, two V-shaped end sections, A, B, and the skeleton box section 0, which when put together form a U-shaped crate with an opening between the legs thereof.
In the preferred form of construction 1, 2, represent lateral braces and outside protectors attached to the top frame piece 3, and with the central strip 4 form the leg protecting the bows upon the outside. 7
5 represents an inside support and protector for the bows, protecting the same, when desired, on the inside for shipment. The foot pieces 5 are secured to cross rails 6 and 7 at the top, and to the supporting bars 1, 2 and 4, at the base.

inclosing and protecting the inside portion of the top E, as shown in Fig. 2.
The preferred form of construction is to make the outer skeleton portion of the frame without the inside supporting parts 7, 5, 6 and 9 being attached, then place the stretched top in position within the skeleton, and nail the strips 5, 6 and 7, in position to secure the top in place. In this method of construction the inner supporting sections 5 are drawn firmly against the hows, the parts are stayed to prevent the working of the top inclosed therein, holding it firmly seated against the outside portions of the skeleton frame. When thus constructed the top and bows are secured from accidental injury by being inclosed and protected within this skeleton frame, and they may be packed in a comparatively small space by nesting one of the feet inside and the opposite foot outside of its counterpart or companion crate, as indicated in Fig. 3.
The strips 5, 6, 7 and 9, may be omitted if desired, as ordinarily the strips 1, 2, 4, would serve as a sufficient protection to the bows, and such construction is embraced in the first clause of claim herein, however the form shown is preferable.
