Description

(No Model.) I
M. A. SHELDON.
I TACK LIFTER. N0. 491,8\18. I Patented Feb. 14, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARK ALDRICH SHELDON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
TACK-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,818, dated February 14, 1893. Application filed January 21, 1892. Serial No. 418,751. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MARK ALDRICH SHED DON, acit-izen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tack-Lifters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tack lifters, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and definitely pointed out in the claims.
In the, drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved lifter, showing the tack lifted and in the claw. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation partly in section. Fig. 4 is a vertical central, longitudinal section showing the manner of clamping the tack in the claw.
A is the shank. B is the handle of a tack lifter. The shank A is straight, having flat top, and bottom sides and is provided at one side near the forward end with an arm 0 forming the fulcrum upon which to turn the lifter, after the claw is engaged with the tack to pulljt. This construction forms the subject matter of Letters Patent granted to me dated December 29, 1891, No. 466,066. The claw portion, as shown in Fig. 3, is formed with a curved or beveled under face constituting a wedge or short lever for'engaging beneath the tack. In the upper face I form a recess a which extends from the sharp edge at the point of the claw in an inclined plane up to the shank, as plainly shown in Fig. 3, the vertical side flanges I) being formed at either side, as plainly shown in the drawings.
To hold the tack in the lifter after it has been withdrawn I provide a spring clamp D, preferably a flat spring, secured upon top of the shank and extending to near the front of the claw. This spring I provide at its forward end with a depending foot E, which engages into the recess abetween the flanges b, and also with an upturned lip F to allow the head of the tack to be engaged between it and the claw, as plainly shown in Fig. 4. When the tack has been lifted the spring clamp holds it tightly in position, as shown in Fig. 4 by clamping the head between the foot E and the claw, and it maybe then s dropped into the receptacle G by simply drawing across the edge thereof, as shown in Fig. 4.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A tack lifter consisting of a shank having a claw at its end formed with a centrally recessed upper face and a spring secured to the shank extending forward and bent down or curved at its end forming a foot normally resting in said recess, and having an upturned lip at its end substantially as described.
2. In a tack lifter the combination with the handle, of aclaw having a beveled under portion, a recess at the end of the claw havinga bottom formed in an inclined plane and vertical side flanges, a spring secured on the shank extending down over the claw having an upturned lip at its end and a depending foot entering the recess and adapted to clamp the head of the tack therein, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARK ALDRICH SHELDON.
