Description

(No Model.)
C. G. BECKER.
WHIP. No. 491,512. Patented Feb.' 14, 1893.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES G. BECKER, OE WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
WHIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,512, dated February 14, 1898. Application flied February 24, 189].. Serial No. 382,448. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES G. BECKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Vesteld, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Whip-Trim mings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is principally to provide an elastic or soft yielding tip to be placed upon and protect the handle end of the whip.
My object is, further, to provide a tip which may be readily and easily fastened in position, and one which may be readily replaced if worn or destroyed.
My object is, further, to provide an inexpensive construction which will give the requisite protection and finish.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the construction herein shown.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a sectional side view of a handle having a button or ferrule mounted thereon, within which ferrule a plug is held and upon which plug a knob is formed upon which the elastic tip is mounted. 2 is a side view in section of a ferrule, an ornamental plug having the tip mounted thereon, and all mounted on the handle end.
In detail` a indicates a section of the body of a whip handle, h the cap, c the ferrnle, d plug, e load, andf knob.
The construction will be readily understood on reference to the drawings.
The whip handle, or butt, is formed to receive a ferrnle or trimming c, which ferrule fits tightly thereon and projects a short dis tance beyond the end of the butt; a plug d which is preferably slightly tapering is provided which fits tightly within the projecting portion of the ferrule wherein the same may be cemented or otherwise fastened. The outer face of the plug is provided with a knob f, the neck of which, or portion between the knob and plug body, is made of less diameter than the knob, thus forming an annular recess. An elastic cap or tip is provided which is preferably made of rubber, and the same is formed with a chamber adapted to receive the knob f and provided with an inwardly projecting flange adapted to fit tightly within the annular recess above referred to. The cap may be formed with a bead, or otherwise ornamented if desired; the body of the plug may also project a short distance from the ferrule within which it is mounted, and the projecting portion be ornamented with beads, or otherwise.
Having therefore described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a whip, the combination of the stockbutt ct, the plug d abutting the end of the stock and formed with a button on the end thereof, having an annular groove at its base, a ferrule uniting the stock and the plug, and an elastic cap to fit over the button and formed with an inwardly directed annular flange at the entrance of the cap to iit in and engage the annular groove at the base of the button, substantially as described.
