` Blaekng'Box Holder.
No. 49,115. Patented Aug. 1, 1865.
fnv-enger,
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
CHAS. E. S. JELLIFFE, OF WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK.
BLACKlNG-BOX HOLDER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,1 l 5, dated August 1,1865.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. S. J ELLIFFE, of Williamsburg, in the county of Kings, Long Island, and State of New York. haveinvented a new and Improved Boot and Shoe Blacking Box Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use. the same, reference being had to aceompanyin g drawings, forming part of this specification.
In the blacking of boots or shoes it is quite desirable to have some device attached to the blacking-box by which it can be so held with the hand that there would be no possible danger of soilngit from the blacking; and to produce a suitable device or handle for the above purpose is the object ot' the present invention, 1t consisting in forming in or attaching to and uponthe outside ot'the'bottom plate ofthe box, either by striking up or punching the same or by soldering a separate and independent piece thereto, a hollow clasp or socket, made ot' a square or othersuitable shape and open at both its ends, in which socket, and brought to a tight and close hearing therewith, is inserted one end ot' a suitable-shaped handle to be held in the hand, either lnade of wood, |netal, or other proper material.
In accompanying plate of drawings my ilnprovement is illustrated, Figure 1 being a view ot' the bottom of a blacking-box having a handle applied to it according to my improvement, and Fig. 2 a central section taken in the plane of the line a: x, Fig. l.
,a a in the drawings represent a blackingbox, made of sheet-tin or any other suitable metal or material, and of any desired outline andsize, b, its top or cover. At or near the central portion, e, of bottom plate, d, of the box, and by striking up or punching with a i suitable instrument therefor, I form an outward-projecting, short, and narrow squareshaped clasp, band, or hollow socket, f, open at both ofits ends g g, in one of which openings` the end h of the portion l of a handle, m, made ot' a similar form in cross-section to that of the clasp, is inserted and brought to a tight and close bearing, thus securely holding the same thereto, the handle portion ot'A it being grasped by the hand when the blacking in the box is to be used, and made of sufficient length to prevent the hand from being soiled with the blacking. t
In lieu of forming the handle-holding clasp by striking up or punching the metallic bot tom plate, as described, it can be formed by securing with solder or any other proper means a separate and independent strip of metal of the desired length and shape; but I prefer the inode explained, as it is not only much cheaper, but requires less time and labor, it being aecornplished by a few blows of a hammer upon the proper-shaped die. After having inserted the handle in the metallic band, as described, if desired to so secure it therein as to prevent any possibility of its becoming disengaged therefrom, the clasp can be sufficiently indent- Ved at or near its center, by means of any snitable tool, as to cause it to slightly penetrate the wood of which 'the handle is made.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as a new article of manufacture- A blackingbox having a handle or holder attached thereto, substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose specified.
CHAS. E. S. J ELLIFFE. Witnesses:
M. M. LIVINGSTON, J M. COVINGTON.
