UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
LABAZURE O. MCLANE, OIF LINESVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRANSFER FOR EVAPORTING-PANS.
SPECIFICATION forming parj; of Letters Patent No. 490,858, dated January 31, 1893.
Application filed April 28, 1892. Serial No. 430,995. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, LABAZURE O. MCLANE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Linesville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transfers for Evaporating-Pans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in transfers for evaporating pans.
The object ot' the invention is to provide means for connecting the evaporating pans'to each other so that the operator can regulate the flow from one pan to the other by adjusting the transfer up or down; also in order that the sirup can be drawn from one pan; the device being so constructed that it provides not only a transferbuta pan hinge and draw-oif in one; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a modification, showing a removable plug or stopper.
A and A designate evaporating pans, to
which my improved transfer is attached over the openings near the lower corners thereof.
To each of the pans castings B are rigidly attached by means of rivets or bolts, the portions a and b of said casting lying against the side and bottom of the pan respectively which has an aperture registering with the aperture c in the casting. To one side the castings B are provided with rounded ends d beyond which the castings are extended and apertured to receive a draw off plug of ordinary construction, which may be a turning plug as shown at D in Fig. l-or a removable plug as shown at D in Fig. 3.
E, E designate pipes having elbows e and e which are socketed to receive the rounded ends CZ of the castings B, while the upper ends of said pipes are formed into elbows c2 which are joined to each other by a hinge coupling or other suitable joint as shown; the joints being secured by bolts or thumb screws ff, under the heads of which are placed washers, and the apertures in the transfer adjacent to the head thereof are of sufficient size to give the bolts the requisite amount of play when one of the pans is raised to a higher level than the other.
The device hereinbefore described forms a cheap, simple and convenient means for connecting two pans to each other, and by the use of the same the sap or sirup may be drawn from one pan or fed from one pan into an adjacent one, and by simply turning the connections E and E upwardly asshown in Fig. l communication between the two pans can be cut off. The hinge couplings will permit one pan to be elevated orV raised slightly higher than the other, and the -connections may be readily separated when it is desired to remove one of the pans.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. A transfer for evaporating pans, consisting of castings or sections B having straight portions at right angles with each other which are adapted to engage with the side and bottom of the pans to which they are attached, said sections being connected to each other by pipes E and E', the parts at the points of attachment having movable connectingjoints, substantially as set forth.
2. A transfer for evaporating pans, consisting of a section or casting B having an aperture c to which a pipe connected to the adj acent pan is secured, and a projecting portion having a draw-off plug, substantiallyas shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LABAZURE O. MCLANE.
Witnesses:
J. N. WALKER, A. M. FENNER.
