POST-3U PPO RT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,651, dated January 31,1893.
I Application filed April 26, 1892. Serial No. 430,709. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NIELS HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Falls, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Post- Support, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in base-plates for posts, and consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide a device of the character set forth of such construction and arrangement as to prevent rotting of the end of the post secured thereto by draining all Water or moisture away therefrom and permitting a circulation of air thereunder to keep the same in dry condition, and at the same time forming a strong and durable means of support.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved base-plate shown as supporting a portion of a post. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the base-plate detached. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional View on the line m:r, Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of the base-plate, which as shown is of angular form but can be readily made in any other shape desired without departing from the invention. The said body 1 is formed with a series of openings 2, extending vertically through the same and arranged at predetermined and regular intervals and preferably in such manner that the entire surface of the end of the post supported on the device will be open for the purpose of draining moisture therefrom and permitting a circulation of the atmosphere thereunder and in contact therewith. Rising from the top of the body 1 is a series of spurs or spikes 3 which take into the bottom or end of the post and hold the same stationary on the base- The under side of the device is provided with a series of cross-braces or ribs 4, extending diagonally across the same and terminating in feet 5, which are arranged at an angle to the said cross-braces or ribs in order to hold the device in elevated position. The under sides of the feet 5 are recessed or concaved as at 6 in order to prevent settling of moisture at these points and permit ingress of the air to dry out the surface underthe same. The said feet are also provided with apertures or openings 7, through which may be passed securing-bolts or screws 8 to hold the device in position.
The device entire may be cast integral, or otherwise formed as desired, but it is obvious that a formation of the same at one time by casting would be much cheaper than any other form of construction, and owing to the simplicity of the device it can be produced inexpensively.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A base-plate for posts, having a seriesof apertures therein, and spurs or spikes rising therefrom, substantially as described.
2. A base-plate for posts, having a series of apertures therein, spurs or spikes rising from. the upper surface thereof, and feet extending from the lower side of the same, substantially as described.
3. A base-plate for supporting posts, having feet extending from the lower portion thereof and provided with recesses or concaves in the under sides of the same, substantially as described.
4.. A base-plate for supporting posts, consisting of a body with a series of openings extending tnerethrough, spurs or spikes rising from the upper surface of the same, and cross braces or ribs on the under side of the body terminating in feet arranged at an angle thereto to elevate the device, said feet having recesses or concaves in the under sides thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
NIELS HANSEN.
