To a/ZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. REDDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kings Station, Saratoga county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin Olothes-Driers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make 'and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciication.

My invention relates to an improvement in folding clothes driers; and consists in the means employed in connecting the supporting post with a ground socket; in connecting the post with the revolving portions at the top; in connecting the line-supporting arms with the supporting braces made of wire; and in the jacket, or covering made to incase the driers when folded up, all substantially as herein after set forth. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, showing the arms with the double-wire brace extended. Fig. 2 is a half reverse in section, showing one arm folded up; Fig. 3 is an outside, front view, showing the jacket, or covering in place; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the upper hub, showing a recess, and washer. Fig. 5 is a front elevation, detached, showing the arms with a single-wire brace extended.

In my construction and operation I set in the ground a hollow wooden post A, and in the top of thisI place a metal socket B. which maybe whole or in sections, having at its upper end a iiange O, to `cover the entire top of the post A. to prevent water from entering the post to rot it; and also to prevent the socket from dropping down through the hollow wooden post; the said post and socket to receive the lower end of the supporting post D. of the drier. In the lower end of the socket B. is an inwardly projecting ange, or stop E. with a hole F. through the center, and the said stop provided with a series of gutters G. for conducting on? any water that may possibly pass down between the post and the inside of the socket, the water after leaving the socket outwardly projecting iange N, the said post being secured to the top ofthe hub O. Through the hub is the hole O. allowing the tenon P. of the section of post Q. to pass through, and upward into the section L. providing a means of putting the hub in position, when the two sections of the post and hub are made fast together. The section Q. extends down into the upper end of the post D. This post, as a whole, may be tubular or solid; but tubular at this end for receiving the section Q. In this section is an annular recess R. and a pin or pins S. or screw-point, is made to pass into this recess, to prevent the drier from being thrown upward and o from the post by the wind or otherwise.

The hub O. has in the lower side a recess and in it a washer T. and the hub with the washer rests on the top of the post D. and with the sections L. and Q, revolves at this point. to receive the upper end of the braces J. for supporting the arms. These braces are made of wire, either single or double; when made double as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, they are, at the upper end b, bent inwardly at right angles, and the ends from opposite sides made to enter holes in the ears ct. of the hub O. and are held in position by means of a clasp d. bent outwardly to receive the arm I. and made to rest against the lower and outer side of this arm, where it is covered by the strap or staples e. and held in position, and by which the said arm is raised. This brace, operating from the lower edge of the arm, gives more strength to the arm, there being no hole bored through it. Or, the brace may be made of one wire S. as seen in Fig. 5, thereby reducing the expense, with the lower end bent outwardly, and made to enteraslotf. in theupperandinner The hub is provided with the ears a,

edge of the arm I; and having aloop by which it is held with apin g. And the upper end has an eye or loop made to engage the ear a. of

the hub O. The lower end of these braces, either made of the single or double wires, be-

ing bent outwardly, allows the arms to be folded up alongside of, and parallel with the post D, as seen in Fig. l, thus when folded, making a very symmetrical and compact drier.

For spreading the drier, for use, the cord or clinch h. is secured to the hub II. and passed up over the pulley M. and down again through a hole in the opposite side of the hub, and may be held, when the drier is spread, by being wound around one of the lugs of the hub.

The drier, when not in use, is folded, and covered or shielded with a Waterproof textile jacket, by means of the eyelets Z. hooked onto the hooks p. at the upper end of the arms; and the two edges i. are made to lap, and keep together, by means of hooks, or equivalent devices.

Therefore whatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, in a clothes drier, of the sections L. and Q. of a post carrying the hub O. the pulley M. and the hood K, thelower end, or section Q, entering, and turningin the upper end ofthe post D. and held from being moved upward and out of place by the pin S. entering' into the recess R. substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a revolving clothes drier, the doublewire braces fr. having the upper ends each bent inward, and made to enter, from Opposite sides, a hole in the ears a. ofthe hub O. and held in place by the clasp CZ; and the lower end bent outward, and connected with the arms I. on the lower or outer side, substantially as, and for the purpose set forth.
