TRACE-CARRIER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,317, dated January 24, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VILLIAM E. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Trace-Carrier, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trace-carriers, and consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as will he more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of this invention is to provide a loop and supplemental strap directly in connection with the back-band for properly supporting and holding the trace-chain or tug relatively in connection with the back-band, the parts being simple and eifective in their construction and operation, strong and durable, easily and readily applied, 'and comparatively inexpensive in manufacture.

Referring to the drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of a back-band and a portion of a trace chain or tug, showing the preferred form of the improved construction in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a section on the line :rv-JaFigl. Figiis a view similar to Fig. l, of a slightly modified form of construction. Fig. at is a View, in section, on line y-y, Fig. 3.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates the back-band, which may be of any preferred construction or material, and in both the forms shown loops 2 are connected adjacent to the ends of the said back-band and having buckles 3 attached to the central exterior portion of the same. As shown in Fig. l, the said loop 2 is formed with openings el, extending through both sides thereof and through which passes freely a strap 5, connected under the said loop at one end and having the free end thereof so arranged as to be readily connected to the buckle 3.

As shown in Figs. 3 and Li, the construction is almost precisely the same with the exception that the loop 2 is formed with an elongated slot 6, extending through one side thereof and projecting inward to the bend of the same. In this instance the strap 5 is secured to the outer side of the loop adjacent to the point where the latter is attached, and the secured end of said strap carries the buckle 3. In this form of the device, the strap is pressed into the slot G or passed through a. link of the trace chain or tug, and the free end of the same is then attached to the buckle 3, by which means the said trace chain or tug is held in permanent adjusted position and prevented from slipping or dragging out of place.

The operation of the construction shown in Figs. l and 2 is similar to that just described, and in both instances a convenient form of device of this character is provided.

This device is very useful in plowing or wagoning, and may be readily manipulated in attaching the trace chain or tug in connection therewith.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a trace carrier, the combination of a backband having a loop thereon with an opening therein communicating with the interior of the lower portion thereof and a buckle on the exterior side of the same located ahove the said opening, and a supplemental strap having one end thereof permanently secured and the other end free, said free end of the strap being passed through said opening and a link of the trace, and ex-l tended upward over the outer side of the loop to removably engage the saidbuckle, substantially as described.
