Description

' (NoModeL) F. MEDART. STRIKING BAG DRUM. No. 489,750. Patented Jan. 10., 1893.
4 5 ATTEST: INVENTOR:
frederz ckjfeciari fliforney.
V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- FREDERIOK MEDART, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
STRIKING-BAG DRUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters fatent No. 489,750, dated January 10, 1893.
Application filed January 20,1892. Serial No. 418,687. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK MEDART, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Striking-Bag Drums; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to striking bags, employed in gymnasium and athletic exercises; the object of the present improvement being to provide, an improved drum for such bags, embodying the features, of a ready folding of the drum together, into a compact form, for shipment, transportation, &c. combined with means for stretching the drum covering or head, so that it will afford greater elasticity to the same, to effect a quicker return to the bag, and on which the impact of the bag is almost noiseless. I attain such objects by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l, is an under perspective View of a striking bag and drum, constructed in accordance with my present invention; Fig. 2, a detail cross section of one of the frame members, illustrating the attachment of the head or covering; Fig. 3, a plan view of one of the frame members of the drum, of a slightly modified form.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the different views.
Referring to the drawings 1, represents the striking bag of any suitable construction, suspended by a cord 2, within ready reach of a party exercising, such cord in the present invention being attached to a centrally arranged cross piece 3, on the frame of the drum, as shown.
The drum will consist of a marginal frame, either square, round, or other suitable form, made in sections 4, that overlap each other at their ends, so as to be capable of adjustment one on the other to effect a stretching of the By the use of a perforate covering 5, such as netting, the gathering of dust upon the same is avoided, as well as the disagreeable consequences arising when a dust covered drum is struck, at the same time it renders the impact of the bag noiseless, and avoids the annoying drumming sound produced by the ordinary striking bag and drum heretofore employed.
The adjustment of the frame sections one upon the other so as to stretch the drum covering 5, is effected by hand, in the usual way, and the parts are secured together at the desired adjustment by meansof bolts 7, passing through elongated slots 8, in the ends of the frame sections 4:, as shown.
When in position the drum will be attached to, or otherwise suitably connected to, the ceiling of a room, in a horizontal position, with the striking bag 1, pendent from its center, so as to receive the blows of the operators fist, from any direction, in the manner usual to this class of exercising apparatus.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination of a striking bag, and a drum, composed of a marginal supporting frame, and a flexible perforate covering therefor, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a striking bag, and a drum, composed ofa marginal frame, formed in sections and made adjustable, and a flexible perforate covering attached thereto, sub stantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a striking bag, and a drum, composed of a marginal frame, formed in sections the ends of which overlap and are provided with elongated slots, bolts for securing the overlapped ends together, and a flexibleimperforate coverin gattached to the frame, substantially as set forth.
1. The combination of a striking bag, and a drum, composed of a marginal supporting frame, provided with the series of studs, and a flexible perforate covering of netting attached to the frame by being hooked on said studs, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof witness my hand this 16th day of January, 1892.
FREDERICK MEDART.
In presence of-- ED. 0. GOEDDE, O. W. STEINMETZ.
