Description

(No Model.) 0. MUSSINAN. ATTACHMENT FOR. LEAD PENGILS.
No. 489,685. Patented Jan. 10, 1893.
WITNESSES: M e%u INVENTOI? $6M- MM ilNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR MUSSINAN, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO EBERIIARD FABER, OF WEST BRIGHTON, NEW YORK.
ATTACHMENT FOR LEAD-PENCILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,685, dated January 10,1893. Application filed November 4, 1892- Serial No. 450,981. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OSCAR MUSSINAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Lead-Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved attachment for lead-pencils for protecting the rubber tips or other devices applied to leadpencils when the same are carried in the pocket, so as to prevent the smudging of the same and keep them clean forimmediate use without smudging the paper when using the same; and the invention consists of an attachment for leadpencils, which consists of a holder for the rubber-tips attached to the pencil and a tip-protector that is pivoted to the holder and composed of a cap having slotted shanks which are secured to the pivot of the holder and adapted to slide on the tipholder so as to swing sidewise of the same when the tip is to be used or over the same for protecting the tip when the pencil is not in use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a lead-pencil with my improved attachment for lead pencils. Fig. 2 is a side-elevation of the same, showing the protector in position on the tip, and Fig. 3 is also a side-elevation showing the same in position sidewise of the tip, so that the latter is ready for use.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a lead-pencil, to the end of which is applied by a suitable sheet metal holder B, a rubber tip 0. The rubber tip is protected by a pivoted cap D which is rounded off at the end and provided with elongated and slotted shanks D that are guided on the enlarged heads of the pivot d of the cap D, so that the protector can be readily moved along the heads of the pivot into position over the rubber tip, so as to fully cover and protect the same. The rear part of the protection cap D is made of greater length than the front part, so as to abut against the holder, when placing the cap over thetip. When itis desired to use the rubber tip, the protector is first moved in longitudinal direction along the slots of the shanks and then swung sidewise, as shown in Fig. 3, until it abuts by its rear part on the pencil, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. In this position the rubber tip can be readily used for erasing pencil or other marks. After the rubber tip is used, the protector is placed again in position over the same by swinging it over the tip and sliding it along the heads of the pivot in longitudinal direction over the pencil, as shown in Fig. 2. In this position it protects the rubber-tip against smudging, and keeps the same always ready for use, whenever required, the protector forming a very neat, convenient and useful attachment to all pencils provided with rubber tips.
In place of the rubber tips, supported at the end of the lead-pencil, an ink-erasing device or a tip formed of a composition for removing ink-stains from the fingers, may be used, as it is obvious that the protector performs the same function in all these modifications.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An attachment for lead pencils, consisting of a holder provided with a tip attached to the end of the pencil, and a tip protector provided with slotted shanks, said shanks being pivoted to the tip-holder, so as to permit the sliding and swinging on the tip-holder, substantially as set forth.
2. An attachment for lead pencils, consisting of a holder provided with a tip attached to the-end of the pencil, and a tip-protector provided with a rounded-off end or cap and with slotted shanks pivoted to the holder, the rear-part of the protector being made longer than the front part, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signedmy name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
O. MUSSI'NAN.
