SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,656, dated January 10, 1893.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MooEEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Buckle, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to buckles for use on harness and other purposes Where found applicable, and the object thereof is to provide a buckle of rigid form throughout, and wherein a pivoted or loose tongue is dispensed with and adapted to connect the contiguous ends of different devices or the parts of a single device to form loops Jfor the purpose of adjustment, and with this object in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring` to the drawings, the numerals l and 2 Adesignate the oppositely-situated loops to provide a frame of substantial S-shape. The loops are each provided with a side throat 3, oppositely arranged on each side of a central connecting bar 4. The ends of the frame terminating at, and forming one side wall for each of said throats 3, are struck or extended downward to form guards 5, and the bar 4 is depressed below the under side of the buckle which produces guards 6. The guards and 6 prevent accidental disengagement of the strap from the buckle in a lateral direction. Oentrally rising from the bar 4 is a stud or post 7 that is engaged by an opening in the strap to prevent longitudinal disengagement of the latter and to provide for a firm and secure detention of the said strap when mounted in connection with the buckle.

It will be understood that the strap ma;l beI vquickly and readily passed :into the buckle through the oppositely-disposed throats 3, and owing to the depressed form of the bar 4 the edges of the strap are brought to bear against the frame and thereby held in position.

The buckle may be constructed of any suitable material and be suitably ornamented.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:-A

As an improved article of manufacture, a buckle having a frame of substantial S-shaped form to provide opposite loops l and 2 and with throats therein arranged in opposite sides of the said loops, and a central depressed connecting-bar having a stud or post rising centrally therefrom in a Vertical direction,the opposite ends of said bar being extended and connecting with the under side of the frame at the points where the said throats are formed, and the free ends of the frame being bent downwardly parallel with the upwardly-extended ends ot' the depressed bar and terminating in ahorizontal plane parallel with the under side of the said depressed bar, said downwardly-bent ends of the frame and the upwardly-extended ends of the bar forming side guards and the downwardly-bent ends of the frame forming with said guards the opposite Walls of the throats, substantially as described.
