Description
U ll TD STAES PATENT OFFICE.
E. D. WILSON, OF PHILIPPL. VIRGINIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWIN D. WILSON. of Philippi, in the county of Barbour and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for l/Vashing Clothes, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this speciflcation. l
Figure l isa perspective view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section.
My improvement consists in constructing the machine in such manner that the concave bed of rollers which is usually placed on the bottom of the wash vboard or on springs resting thereon shall be suspended by arms from theusual rock shaft to which the ordinary vibrating rubber is attached so that said bed of rollers shall move longitudinally and simultaneously but in a contrary direction and in a manner approximating to that of the human hands lduring the operation of rubbing or washing a garment.
The machine in other respects is made like the common washing machine such as the tub A, the legs B, the standards C, arms D, swinging box E, follower F, wringer G.
The concave or bed of parallel rollers H is likewise made in the usual manner. It, however, as before stated is suspended by arms I from the pivots of the rock shaft K which shaft vibrates or turns in bo-xes or bearings in the upper ends of the standards C fastened to the sides of the tub. This concave bed of rollers and clothes box are vibrated back and forth longitudinally by means of rods M attached to a transverse double crank shaft N turned by hand.
The tub A is provided with a hole and plug P at the lower part thereof for the discharge of the water.
The hot water and soap being put into 4,891,'dated December 15, 1846.
the tub A and the clothes placed in the swinging box E the follower F is brought down upon them by means of the rod Q, attached to it passing through the'rock shaft and made fast. The t-riple crank shaft N is then turned which causes the box containing the clothes to move in one direction while the concave of rollers is made to move in an opposite direction thus subjecting the clothes to a rubbing and pressing and rinsing action between the rollers of the swinging concave H and the bars or rolls of the follower F until the dirt be completely eX- tracted from them. They are then removed to the wringing apparatus G,
The wringing apparatus consists of a* crank axle with a clamp G at the end for seizing the article to be wrung which article being twisted around a fixed obj ect and the crank turned will cause the article put therein to be twisted and the water to be expressed therefrom. The clamp is then to be opened and the article removed.
What I claim as my own invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Oonstructing the washing machine with a swinging concave of rollers H, upon which the clothes to be washed are placed,
in combination with a swinging box E open at top and bottom for holding the clothes in contact with the rollers I-I and moving them back and forth over the same having a corresponding follower F, placed therein moved simultaneously with said concave of rollers by means of a triple crank/N and connecting rods M the concave of rollers moving' infone direction, while the box with the follower and clothes therein moves in an opposite direction, by which the double action is produced as set forth.
E. D. WILSON.
