COUPLING FOR EXTENSION-TABLE LEAVES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,001, dated January 3, 1893.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, RILEY HANAFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, county of Rock, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couplings for the Leaves of Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to join the leaves of an extension table together in such a manner that, while allowing them to be readily removed the table may be pulled about by one end without allowing the leaves to separate, when they are in their normal position.

In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1, is an isometrical representation of woodwork separated one quarter showing the construction of the coupling. Fig. 2, shows the woodwork separated. Fig. 3, is an isometrical representation of section of the coupling.

This coupling comprises two portions, a hook and a stud two of each of which a right and a left are secured to the adjacent edges of the table leaves and interlock when the leaves are in position, by right and left I mean that the castings are not interchangeable. The hook portion of the coupling is located on the leaf so that both will lie between the studs of the sections engaged, that there may be no side movement of the joint.

The hook section of this coupling comprises a base 1,its curved uprising rim 2,having its end beveled foreasy engagementwith the stud, and the shank 3, perforated with the countersunk holes 4, for securing the coupling to the leaf 5. The edge of the leaf to which the hook section of the coupling is secured is cut out to allow the shank to lie flush with the surrounding surface. The stud consists of the curved edge 6, which conforms to the curve of the inner edge of the rim 2, and the outwardly extending shank 7, provided with the countersunk hole 8, for attachment to the leaf.

It is necessary in this portion as it is also in the hook to have rights and lofts to prevent lateral play between the leaves. A recess 9, is formed in the edge of the leaf for the reception of the hook of the adjacent coupling, and the shank 7 is sunk into the wood not to project above the surrounding surface.

In application to the leaves of a table it is necessary that those leaves permanently affixed thereto, and never removed, should be made narrower than ordinary as it is necessary that no fewer than two leaves first be added to the table to engage all the couplings though after the two are in, any further member may be added and the leaves will be finally held together. To render this possible it is however necessary to provide one of the leaves with two sets of engaging hooks, one set curving downward and those of the opposite edge curving upward and this leaf is the key which must be one of the two leaves last in position, and this key can only be placed adjacent to one of the end bars of the table.

I claim as my invention.

A coupling consisting of two members,one of said members secured within a recess in the woodwork and lying fiush with the surround ing surface, a projection extending from the base portion of the member backward into the recess and having a curving surface, the other member of the coupling comprising a base sunk into the wood work flush with the surrounding surface, a curving hook extending outward from the base, a rim for the curving edge of the hook, said rim for engaging the curving surface of the projection on the first mentioned member.
