STATES GUIDE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,862, dated December 2'7, 1892.

Be it known that we, SERDINIA WINTERS and SETH A. WINTERS, citizens of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Jay and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guides for Sewing-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to a novel form of guide especially adapted for sewing ma-, chines used for domestic purposes; and the object of this invention is to provide a guide designed more particularly for use in sewing in the corners or angles of seams in garments or other articles made from fabrics.

The invention consists in the novel combinations of devices and peculiar construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which:-

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the guide in operative position and Fig. 2 is a like view with one of the members adjusted out of the way to enable the other smaller member to be brought into use in nooks or corners of the fabric. Fig. 3 is a detail detached view of the several parts of the guide, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 00 a; of Fig. 1.

A designates the T shaped supporting plate, and B, O, the sections or members of the guide which are adj ustably attached to the head of the supporting plate and thelatter is in turn adjustably fixed to the bed plate of the sewing machine so as to be moved back and forth toward or from the needle. ' bed plate and at the same time the slotD enables the supporting plate and the guide attached thereto to-be adjusted at any desired distance from the needle to accommodate goods or fabrics of different widths. The head a of the T-shaped supporting plate is also provided with a longitudinal slot E which extends at right angles to the length of the slot D in the shank a of the supporting plate, and in this slot E of the head of theTshaped plate are fitted the set screws F, G, which serve to rigidly hold the members or sections B, O, of the guide to the head of the supporting plate. The member B of the guide has its inner end fitted beneath the head of the supporting plate, and provided with athreaded vertical socket to receive the shank of its set screw F; and the outer end of the member B of the guide has a vertical straight head I) which is made quite wide and against which the edge of the fabrics are guided or fitted in order to secure the proper alignment of the fabrics to the needle, and the member Bis further provided with the raised portion forming a stop or abutment b, which rests against the edge of the transverse part of the supporting plate. The other member 0 of the guide has its body fitted beneath the slotted head of the supporting plate, and provided with a rib c and a socket c that receives the threaded shank of its set screw. G; and the other end of the member 0 of the guide is bent into approximately U shape and is made quite narrow. The length of the loop or the inverted U of the narrow guide member 0 is such that its outer vertical arm is adapted to align with the head of the member B of the guide when the members are properly clamped by their respective set screws to the supporting plate. At the inner end of the supporting plate, a vertical threaded socket i is provided to accommodate a set screw I which is adapted to bear or rest directly upon the bed plate of the machine and by turning which downward the outer end of the shank of the supporting plate A can be elevated to level the supporting plate and guide on the bed plate of the machine.

This being the construction of our improved guide, the operation may be described as follows: Thesupporting plateis properly clamped at the suitable distance from the needle by its set screw, and if it is desired to guide straight sewing to the needle, the two guidemembers 13, O, are employed, said guide members being clamped to the head of the T- shaped plate by their respective set screws so that the head of the memberB is in line with the outer end of theinverted U or loop shaped end of the narrow member or section 0. For straight sewing, the fabrics are kept by the aligned guide members at the proper distance relative to the needle; but when it is desired to sew the fabrics in a corner or nook of the garment, as for instance the lapel of a coat, the wide section or member B of the guide is adjusted or turned out of the way by loosening its set screw, bringing the guide member and its screw to the end of the slot E, and then turning the member or section B around to the other side of the head a on the set screw F as a center. The narrow section C of the guide can now beadj usted to the proper position relative to the needle, and as the outer vertical arm of its loop or inverted U end is very narrow, said end will readily admit of fabrics being readily turned or manipulated either to the right or left in order to sew into the corners or nooks of the garment.

The invention is simple in construction, can be applied or used on any ordinary sewing machine, efficient and reliable in operation, and cheap of manufacture.

\Ve are aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction of the mechanism herein shown and described as an embodiment of our invention can be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of our invention, and we therefore reserve the right to make such modifications as fairly fall within the scope of our invention.

To adapt the guide to an ordinary machine no change is necessary except that in the presser foot a recess or slot should be provided as in Fig. 1. A special form of presser foot should be supplied with each guide.

What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A guide for sewing machines, comprising the T-shaped supporting plate having its shank provided with the longitudinal slot and its head with a slot at right angles to the other slot, the wide guide member clamped to the slotted head of said plate by a set screw, and the narrow member 0 also clamped to the head of the supporting plate and independently adjustable by another set screw and having a rib working in the slot thereof and adapted to align with the head of the member B as and for the purpose described.

2. A guide for sewing machines, consisting of the supporting plate adapted to be secured to the bed plate of the sewing machine and having the slotted head, the narrow guide having the loops and adjustably secured in the slot, the wide adjustable and reversible guide having the vertical straight head and the abutment resting against the slotted head, and the set screw for holding the guide in an adjusted or reversed position.

3. In aguide forsewing machines, the combination with the bed plate, of the supporting plate having the shank provided with a longitudinal slot and beveling screw, the transverse slotted head, the narrow guide having its shank mounted upon the underside of the slotted head and provided with the loop and adjustable in the slot of the head, the Wide guide also having its shank mounted upon the underside of the slotted-head and having the vertical straight head and being reversible and adjustable in the slot of the head, and having the abutment resting against the slotted head, for the purpose described.
