WAGON-SHAFT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,772, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed March 3, 1392. Serial No. 423,594. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. F. PAUL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shafts for Wagons, Oarriages, and other Vehicles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of shafts for a wagon, carriage or other vehicle adapted to sustain the weight of the person entering the vehicle, and relieve the animal thereof.
It also consists in forming the shafts in jointed sections, whereby the front section may be readily raised and supported against the wagon body.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of shafts embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of a portion thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawingsz-A designates shafts which are formed of sections B and 0, connected by hinged or pivotal joints D, whereby the section 0 may be raised and placed against the body of the vehicle as a support therefor, this being accomplished without disturbing the section B, while said section 0 when lowered, may vibrate with the motions of the animal occupying the same position as usual. The section Bis connected at rear by the bolts E of the thill couplings, with the axle clips F, the front irons of said coupling extending considerably below said bolts, to form legs G, which abut against said clips or adjacent portions of an axle, and thus sustain the section B in such manner that it is prevented from lowering and superimposing its weight upon the animal. The steps H are connected with the section B, and when either of the same is occupied by aperson en tering the vehicle, such weight is received by said section without being transmitted to the animal, owing to the abutment of the legs G of the thill irons or couplings, as has been stated.
The section B is short in length, and in order to strengthen the side pieces thereof, there are attached thereto, the braces J, which extend from the rear to the front of said pieces, and are suitably bolted thereto, forming for each side of the section a truss which adds greatly to the strength of the section.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A sectional shaft having its rear section provided with a brace rod with a depending limb, a clip to which said shaftis pivoted, said limb normally abutting against said clip, preventing the lowering of said section, substantially as described.
2. A sectional shaft having its rear section provided with a brace rod extending from front to rear thereof, forming a truss, and having a depending limb adapted to be pivotally attached to a clip, against which said limb abuts, said parts being combined substantially as described.
