SPECEFICATTON forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,291, dated July 28, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK T. BATZ- LAFF, a citizen of the United States. residing at La Porte, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VehicleSprings and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to IO which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to vehiclesprings of the class termed double center springs, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described,and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the lower branch of the double center spring, which is composed preferably of three leaves, the lower one of which is provided with the eyes B B at its ends, through which the attachment to the front and rear axle is effected. The curve C at the rear end of the lower spring takes up the expansion of the lower half of the spring, and thejoints or hinges D D, near the ends of the upper half, P, of the spring, have a similar effect upon those portions of the spring, thereby causing the spring to take the place of a reach Without contracting or lengthening the space between the front and rear axles, and further enabling the use of a rigid gear in connection with the same.

The position of the equalizer H, which is 0 attached to the side bars, I i, with the rubirons J, and by irons KKto the body-sills, is at about an angle of thirty degrees without a load, upon the reception of which it is carried forward to a position nearly level, causing a tightening of the jointsthose of the equalizer H in a forward direction, and those of the spring in a reverse direction.
The upper portion, P, of the spring is connected at its middle by a bolt, P, to the lower 5c portion, and equalizing-springs QQ are interposed between said upper and lower springs on each side of the middle, and are secured in place by bolts. The ends of the upper portion of the spring are provided with hinged 5;: attaching-plates S S, by which the spring is connected to the vehicle-body.
Having thus fully described my invention, n what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 1 Letters Patent of the United States, isok The combination, with the lower branch of the spring having eyes B B at its ends, of the upper portion, P, having hinged attachingplates at its ends, the securing-bolt connecting the upper and lower portions of the spring, 6 and the equalizingspringsQQ,interposed between said upper and lower spring-sections on opposite sides of the securing-bolt, substantially as specified.
