UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NICHoLAs vv. SHERMAN, oE CoLnWATEH, MICHIGAN, AssIGNoH oE oNE- HALF TO DANIEL `ELLIS, OF SAME PLACE.
Two-WHEELED VEHICLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part' of Letters Patent No. 325,772, dated'september 8, 1585.
Application filed July lili, 1885. (No model.)
T @ZZ whom it may. concer/t:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS W. SHER- MAN, a citizenof the United States, residing at Coldwater, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Combinations in a Two-Wheel Cart; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the `art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which forin a part of this specification.
lnthe annexed drawings, Figure l represents a vertical sectional View taken centrally through my improved twowheel vehicle, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the rear end of the vehicle.
This invention relates to two-wheel vehicles; audit consists in certain noveliinprovenients in mounting the seat upon the thills and a semi-elliptic spring secured tov a spring-bar by a joint, b, to which and the seat-bars the footrest is secured, as will befully understood from tl.e following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
I. a1n aware that seat supporting bars attached by asirnple pivot-joint have been used in combination with springs having foot-.rests and attached to a springbar by the rear supporting-spring.
It will be seen from the following description that my rnain object is to construct an exceedingly light vehicle which possesses great strength and durability.
A A-designate the Wheels of the vehicle, and B the axle, as shown in Fig. 2, which latter is preferably arched, as shown.
C C are the thills, which are curved, as shown in Fig. l, and connected rigidly to gether by a transverse thill-bar, C', rigidly secured to the axle B by clips e e, andalso provided with bracing-rods C", which extend Ironi said clips to the thill-bar C'.
D indicates the seat, which is rigidly secured upon the rear ends of two inclined seat* bars,E E,that are attachedto the thills C C at suitable joints, a..
Between the seat D and the joints a the seat-bars E E are fastened or secured by knuckles at b b upon a horizontal spring-bar, F, which is supported upon a compound semielliptic spring, G, and rigidly secured to this spring by means of clips b b. The extremities of the said spring G are connected by shackles c c to clips d d, which are secured to the thills C C.
J designates a slatted foot-stand,which con- 6.;
stitutes the door and the dashboard. fIhe slats of this foot-rest are secured to curved rods K K, the front ends ot' which are sei cured to the spring-bar F and the rear ends to the seat-bars E E immediately beneath the movements by the seat-bars E E, which also resist forward and backward movement and strain on the spring, but allow free vertical movement of the seat.
It will be observed that the jointe is a loose or shackle joint, and that it is designed, in
combination with the spring G,to allow a free motion, both vertically and longitudinallyto wit, a slip joint.
Having described my 'invent-ion, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 8 5
The combination, with the thills attached, as described, to the axle B, of the seat-bars E, loosely attached to the thills at a, and bearing aseat, D, the curved rods K, provided with go foot-slats and secured to the seat-bars, and
`also to the spring-barA F, .the spring G, at
tached, as described, to the thills, and also to the spring-bar,and the joints b, connecting t-he latter to the seat-bars, all Constructed and adapted to operate as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I aftx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NICHoLAs w. SHERMAN.
