TOBACCO-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,588, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed April 25, 1892.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, OswALD EDWIN TooLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hunnewell, in the county of Shelby and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Fig. 4 a plan view of the slotted plate which is secured aroundv the opening through which the knife passes.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective device for cutting tobacco and onein which the knife blade is made to operate through a slot in a counter, shelf, or other stationary object,and consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings A represents a portion of a counter, shelf, or other stationary object, having through it a slot as shown at a and to the under side of said object is firmly secured by screws or other well known means, a bracket B, which forms a guide for the knife -frame C and rack-bar D. This bracket may be of any suitable -design and shape and has a groove b in which a portion of the knife-frame and rack-bar fit, and to this bracket is pivoted asegmental pinion E which is provided with a lever-handle F for raising and lowering the knife-frame in the operation of cutting. To the upper portion of the frame C is riveted or otherwise secured a blade G which preferably has a curved cutting edge c so that when brought down upon the tobacco it will give a shear-cut and thereby more effectually sever the piece of tobacco and produce a clear cut through the same. Any suitable means may be employed forl operating the knife and I therefore wish it understood that I reserve the right to make any change in the details of construction as would come within ordinary mechanical skill without departing from the principle of my invention. In order to have the upper edge of the knife-blade G and the ends of the arms d rest flush with the plate H, a set screwl is provided for the lower end of the rack-bar to rest on. It will therefore be seen that the setscrew performs what is considered an important office in this class of tobacco-cutters, in that it serves the purpose of a regulator for the knife blade and frame and adapts the device to counters or other like stationary objects which vary in thickness. After the device has been secured in place, the frame which carries the knife-blade is lowered just enough to bring the heel or upper edge of the blade flush or on the same horizontal plane with the top of the counter or other object or the slotted plate connected thereto. When in this position the set-screw is turned so that the end thereof will come in contact with the lower end of the rack-bar, thus forming a stop therefor to bring the frame and the knifeblade in position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,

This feature of the invention is rendered necessary to the successful operation of the device, as should the knife-blade project above the top of the counter or other object to which the device is connected, it would be in the Way and danger of persons cutting themselves and if the upper end or edge of the knife-blade came below the counter it would leave Ya receptacle for the accumulation of dust and dirt which would adhere to the tobacco.
