FIHj I IL? il WIIWESSES UNrTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALOIS KLEITZ AND CARL L. KLEITZ, OF SIGOURNEY, IOWA.
ROPE TAKE-UP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,565, dated December 2'7, 1892.
Application filed August 18, 1892. Serial No. 443,450- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALOIs KLEITZ and CARL L. KLEITZ, citizens of the United States, residing at Sigourney, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Hope or Cable Tape-Ups; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in rope or cable take-ups, and is especially adapted to wire cables, such as are used with stump-pullers, grubbing-machines and other machines where it is desirable to use rope or cable at different lengths; and it consists of the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our device, showing rope or cable in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a modification of the same. Fig. 3'is a view showing our device in practical use.
A represents an elliptically shaped frame having its outer wall provided with a suitable groove 6 extending completely around our device.
B is a side forming a surface bearing over which the rope or cable passes.
D is a shoulder to guide the rope or cable.
E is an upwardly extending hook to prevent the rope or cable from springing out of the grooves f f. Both ends of the surface bearing B are grooved at points f,f, sufficiently to allow the rope or cable to lie in the groove and to allow the loose end of the rope or cable to pass between that part of the rope or cable that passes around the frame A, and the frame itself.
F is a flat bar, one end of which is provided with an eye g. The opposite end is provided with a side catch or arm h extending at right angles therefrom. The said bar F is firmly aflixed to the elliptically'shaped frame A by bolts or other suitable means.
G, G are lugs projecting inwardly over the rope or cable and prevent the same from springing out of the groove 6 when the rope or cable is loose.
It will be seen by the use of our device that the rope or cable can be passed into the groove 6 around the elliptically shaped frame A over the surface bearing B and allowing the loose end of the rope or cable to pass between that part of the rope or cable that passes around the elliptically shaped frame A and the frame itself. The tension on the other part of the rope or cable causes apressure on the rope or cable at the point where the same passes between the elliptically shaped frame A and that part of the rope or cable that passes around the elliptically shaped frame A and the take-up firmly fastens onto the rope or cable at Whatever point it maybe placed on the same.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In a rope or cable take-up, the combination of an elliptically shaped frame A provided with a groove 6 extending around said frame to receive the rope or cable, with suitable lugs extending inwardly over the rope or cable, and the surface bearingBsaid surface bearing being provided with grooves ff, an upwardly extending hook E, and shoulder D, all substantially as, and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
ALOIS KLEITZ. CARL L. KLEITZ.
