WILLIAM G. AVERY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
TOTE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,259, dated December 20, 1892.
Application filed March 18, 1892. Serial No. 425,417. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. AVERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 1ote-]3oxes, of which the following, with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to tote boxes for nail mills, screw factories, and other uses.
The object of my invention is a tote box of sheet metal, the construction of box being such as to give the greatest strength and rigidity with the least weight, and which box is also simple in construction and comparatively cheap to manufacture.
My invention consists in making from a single piece of sheet metal a blank which may be bent to the required form of a box and give strength at the parts of the box subject to the most strain.
The invention is fully described herein and defined in the claims.
In'the drawings, Figure 1 is a blank formed of a single piece of sheet metal ready forbend' ing into shape to form the box; Fig. 2 is aplan of the complete box; Fig. 3 is a broken side elevation, and Fig. 4 is a broken end elevation.
I cut from the corners of a rectangular piece of sheet metal the corners as seen by the full lines 1, and also cut the blank as seen by the full lines 1, leaving the projecting lips 2 upon the side wings 3, the parts 2 being entirely removed. In the end wings,et, are small perforations 5 corresponding with the projections 2, and through which said projections pass when the blank is folded to form the box. The extended end wings 6 form the handles of the box. The blank having been formed as illustrated and described, the side wings 3 are bent up on the dotted lines 7, and then the end wings t are bent up on the dotted lines 8, the projecting lips 2 passing through the perforations 5. The lateral extensions 9 of the end wings 4. are then bent around over the corners against the side wings 3. The dotted lines 10 show where the bend will be. Rivets 12 are then put through the rivet holes 11 to hold the lapped ends 9. The top edges of the side wings 3 may be folded over to reinforce and stiffen the upper edges of the sides of the box, if desired. The extensions 6 of the end wings 4 are then rolled over on the lines 13, as illustrated, to form the handles. The projections 2 may be turned down or riveted down as desired.
The blank may be formed without the projections 2 and their corresponding perforations, 5.
The blank, formed as described, will makea box complete with handles, solid at the corners and reinforced at the places where needed, of a single piece of sheet metal; and being strengthened just where needed and at no other place, the lightest practical weight of metal can be used and the box is as light as can be made.
One distinctive feature of my device is a box with the handles integral with the body of the box, which avoids wireing them on the box and alsoavoids the annoyance of having the handles loosen.
My box is the lightest, simplest, strongest, and the most durable of any that can be made, as well as being-the cheapest to manufacture.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A blank for the purpose described, the blank being formed from a single piece of sheet metal having its corners cut out, with projections upon its side wings, and perforations in its end wings to receive the projections, and extensions on the end wings to form handles for the box, substantially as described.
2. A box of the character described, consisting of a single piece of sheet metal having its corners cut out, with projections upon its side wings, and perforations in its end wings to receive said projections, and integral extensions on the end wings to form handles for the box, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 13th day of August, 1891.
WILLIAM G. AVERY. Witnesses:
J. A. OSBORNE, MARTIN W. SANDERS.
