To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE B. N. DOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Filler Attachments for Lamp-Burners, of which I do declare thefollowing to be so full, clear, and exact a description as will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to manufacture and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the lamp-burner with parts cut away to show my device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing a variation thereof. Fig. 3 shows the positions of the parts of my device When closed. Figs. 4 and 5 are details showing methods of closing the filler-tube. Fig. 6 is a section of my improved burner, showing a modified form of cover and stopper.

The object of my invention is to provide a lamp-burner by the use of which a lamp may be filled in the shortest possible time and with the least expense of physical and mechanical force.

To that end my invention consists in providing certain improvements in the shape of closing devices for the filling-tube to prevent accidents and to guard against the untidy effeet of spilling oil over the lamp and soiling it and contiguous objects and tainting the atmosphere.

In the accompanying drawings, A designates the base-ring of the burner, which is secured to the ring B by braces in the usual Way, and the wick-tube C is secured to the base-ring in the ordinary Way. Between the wick-tube C and the rim of the burner is placed a filling-tube D, made, preferably, tapering in outline. A cap E is secured to the ring B, and a section of this cap is cut away, and a cover F is hinged at either edge to open and close over the top of the filling-tube. When this cover F is hinged to the inside near the wick-tube, as shown in Fig. 1, the outer edge I) is slightly hooked to embrace the recessed portion 1) of the ring 13, and when it is hinged at the outer edge a spring d may be secured to the wick-tube O to securely hold the cover down. The inside of the cover may be provided with a stopper G, (shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3,) which may be made in the shape of a thimble, which fits telescopically into the tube D. It is preferably made of metal and hollow.

In Fig. 6 I show the cover F hinged atthe outer edge of the burner, and a rectangular stopper G is secured to its under side. This cover may or may not be faced with. a material softer than the plug itself, as itis simply intended to prevent the oil from slopping out from the upper end of the tube D.

The crown or dome of the burner is hinged at one side and is designated by the letter B It is adapted to be closed over the entire upper part of the burne concealing the cap and cover and entirely concealing and protecting the tilling-tube.

Instead of the plug-stopper I may provide a stopper in the shape of a stem H, to the lower end of which I secure a valve, to the upper side of which I secure a packing-ring I, of felt or other suitable material. This valve-stopper may be held up against its seat on the lower end of the filling-tube by a coil-' spring K, as shown in Fig. 4, or it may be secured to an arm L, of spring material, to hold itin place, as shown in Fig. 5.

From the foregoing it may be seen at a glance that a lamp may be filled in a moment without unscrewing any cap and without any great amount of trouble.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A burner provided with a hinged crown or dome and a cap which is cut away, forming an opening, in combination with a hinged cover adapted to lay down flush with the face of the cap and provided with a fasteningcatch to hold it down and a filler-tube located beneath said cover, said hinged crown or dome adapted to close down over the cap and cover, substantially as described.
